UK have just received 10m doses of the AZ vaccine. Great news but maybe we shouldn't use them as about ten people may get a blood clot.

Commenting on the decisions, Stephen Evans, professor of pharmacoepidemiology at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, said, “The problem with spontaneous reports of suspected adverse reactions to a vaccine [is] the enormous difficulty of distinguishing a causal effect from a coincidence.” He highlighted that covid-19 disease was very strongly associated with blood clotting and that there had been hundreds, if not many thousands, of deaths caused by blood clotting as a result of covid-19.

Adam Finn, professor of paediatrics at the University of Bristol, said, “The position with the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine at the moment is that there is no sign anywhere, including the UK where very large numbers of doses have now been given, that blood clot related illnesses are happening any more frequently than usual.

“That’s reassuring, because it means either that the vaccine doesn’t cause blood clots at all or, at the very worst, that it’s an extremely rare event.”

Also, given that one of the determinants of reopening the economy has been continued strong take up of the vaccine, a loss of confidence in the vaccines could scupper / delay the roll out of the 'roadmap'.

It could be a rogue batch I suppose but if they can discount that by testing another from the same they should be moving on quickly. As it stood yesterday the risk given the numbers was 0.0002%, I'd take that over the covid figures.

TBF I think that’s what they are doing - by Thursday the EMA should have more info on these issues.

Well, about half of every over 65 in the U.K. has now had it...no issues......

They very rarely do, for obvious reasons. Biologically, they know that someone being 66 or 76 respond like most 65 year olds, other medical conditions notwithstanding.

Well, about half of every over 65 in the U.K. has now had it...no issues......

...not no issues. And there is a question mark over just when these events have been occuring (days, weeks, months).

As a proportion, much less in the AZ trials than in other vaccines.

That was a massive massive error. It's set the hares running on the Oxford vaccine, and they haven't stopped.
