Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

With respect, why would I trust a stranger on the Internet over scientific data?
Better read these said experts and their scientific data and the concern over the E484K spike protein which is avoiding antibodies... Covid cares little about vaccines no matter the nationality...

He knew that people form other regions (as well as those here) would flcok into town and use the shops and restaurants. He petitioned the Tories to get that permission. He isn't 'kin daft. He knew that there was high infection levels and the hospitals were under the cosh. He governs for the Liverpool Chamber of Commerce. He's no better than any Tory.
He appealed, rightly so, for our area to be put in tier 2 because our infection rates were low, that wasn’t an open invite for brain dead morons to flock here because of their need to consume and feed

I’m sorry but I missed the part where he personally wrote to every part of the country to come to the Liverpool City Region, not like people could have used their brain cells and stayed at home in those areas like they were supposed to

Speaking from personal experience but if we’d have been tier 3’d but Manchester or other areas in local distance were open, it wouldn’t cross my mind to go to them to eat out or shop, I’d just stay at home and get what I needed online

Prior to this, Manchester was in tier 2 for a while and we were in tier 3 and our lot headed up there for something to eat and drink.

Mind you the other Tory poodle, Andy Burnham, was holding the door open in Manchester for all the folk from Liverpool and elsewhere.

Think New Zealand don't rely on tourism that much compared to the likes of Spain , Portugal.

Main issue for them is they can't spend their cash on exotic holidays like previous years.

This is true. But, when I went (2 years ago) I believe it was their second-biggest industry (after milk exports or something random like that!). People who live there on this forum will obviously know more.

Should the UK have used advantage of being an island nation and tried to isolate the cases in the same way NZ did? Absolutely.

But the NZ method is just a placeholder, until they get the vaccine fully rolled out. It's not the answer.

You're saying we cant approach this the way manmy other island nations have come at it, some with twice our population with a greater density of population than the UK?

The only think standing in the way of that is the political will to do what they do.

I'm saying we should have done last year, yes. I am saying that would have been sensible.

But it isn't the answer to getting out of this because all of those nations require the vaccine too. If they weren't bothering about a vaccine, then it'd be different, but they are very much wanting a vaccine roll out.

Hospital figures - 135 deaths were announced today, down 58 on yesterday and down 61 on last Monday. 127 deaths were in English hospitals, down 22 on yesterday and down 51 on last week. The 7 day rolling average falls to 295.57

All settings - for the 28 day cut off, 104 deaths were announced today, down 40 on yesterday and down 73 on last Monday. The 7 day rolling average falls to 313.71

For the 60 day cut off, 135 deaths were announced today, down 36 on yesterday and down 80 on last Monday. The 7 day rolling average falls to 461.57

Total UK population is apparently 67m.

Over 20m of the most vulnerable population are now vaccinated - one dose provides a lot of protection.

Given the demographic of serious cases/deaths - you'd think we're pretty much there now wouldn't you?
Feels like spring has sprung too.

A lot of people don't seem to realise how good these vaccines are compared to others we routinely use.

Numbers are dropping quickly.

Schools open Monday, but nothing else changes for 5 weeks. Get the over 50's sorted.

It's a bit too simplistic but if these vaccines reduce deaths from covid by 90% then the overall toll from this would have been lower than expected deaths for the age group. I.e. People might still die with covid but far fewer from it.

Tourism is 3.3% of New Zealand's GDP , while the likes of Spain is at 12%.

Tourism is the countries biggest export, but that money which was getting spent on foreign holidays will be getting ploughed back in to its economy with staycations and home improvements.

It's currently in Liverpool - in a lockdown - 118; it stood at 158 when the city was dropped into tier 2. It stood at the cusp of another surge (it was back over 240 week 3 weeks after going into tier 2), and the decision to go along with the Tories led to the likes of Knowsley going to the top of the infection table for the whole country.

It was a shambolic policy for all but the Liverpool Chamber of Commerce, who Rotheram is a creature of.

Can you stop with the British vax stuff?

AZ isn't even a fully British company. They used Oxford's system to help get it off the ground. I don't care whether a vaccine is made in Sussex or Berlin, as long as it works.

Every vaccine is showing that - against every variant so far tested - it is reducing serious illness, and subsequently greatly reducing the risk of death.

There'll be new variants cropping up and they'll have to be tested. Some variants may mean the vaccines need tweaking - like the South African one has meant they'll have to be tweaked slightly to also reduce the risk of infection, not just death.

But yes, your general point is spot on. The vaccines will do enough for the vast majority of people. That reduces the illness - whatever strain - down to a manageable level for healthcare systems across the globe. That is literally the point of the vaccine.
Well said, we should be avoiding pompous flag waving now more than ever
