What Whitty said (about the vaccines doing the heavy lifting) was very concerning - it sounded a lot like like they aren't going to do anything substantial to try and prevent this thing spreading (hence R now being an irrelevance in terms of whether these measures are working) , just rely on the vaccine preventing hospitalizations and deaths.
That would work domestically for only as long as the protections from this set of vaccines last, and could easily lead to ongoing problems with foreign travel further down the line (especially to countries who have got systems to control outbreaks). It also guarantees that, in the event of a completely different pandemic happening (or this pandemic mutates into one that the vaccine doesn't prevent hospitalizations and deaths), that we'll be faced with the situation we were in March 2020 again.
Okay, but those said countries - which have had success - still require the vaccine too.it isn't - we can (should and absolutely must after this) prevent spread via means other than lockdown; that is how every successful country in this has done it
But, David, THEY STILL NEED THE VACCINESIlve been saying this for weeks mate.
"Der vaxeens will sort it lad" is the ultimate in numbnuts thinking.
They'll help. That's it.
How did other nations where Covid19 is more like a nuisance than the Black Death? Not by vaccines, but by track and trace and behaving collectively.
As you say, the vaccines will give us here about a few months before they need tweaking....then another roll out.
IT IS NOT THE ANSWER.
No, that's not what he - nor I - have been saying. They're just admitting what you want - all avoidable COVID deaths to be avoided, no matter what - is impossible, because there's a recognition that by avoiding those deaths you're creating others by tanking the economy and causing a myriad of mental health issues, destroyings kids development through schools etc.
So what they've said is that even if the R rate goes above one, if that doesn't translate to loads of deaths/hospitalisations, then so be it, because we have a tolerance in regards to acceptable levels of death from one thing when the alternative is much worse. That's just the reality of it.
That sounds like a Manchester problem.
...and they'll use them the right way: to back up their strategy of suppressing the virus. But, David, THEY STILL NEED THE VACCINES
Be boss seeing all the utter bellends with their "vaccine exempt" lanyards they bought from Amazon getting volleyed out of Goodison. The whole vaccine passport is definitely going to be a thing - more so to bribe the younger generations who'll likely not be as bothered with getting it than the large uptake of the vulnerable/elderly.
Be interesting if the same Covidiots you get swarming the comments sections of your sky news, ladbible etc articles will stick to their principles if if means they cant go on holiday or to a concert...
It suggest that there are going to be pockets of infection that will thrive on reopening and then people moving around from there will be a danger to us all. That sounds like a Manchester problem.
CLOSE THE REGIONAL BORDERSIt suggest that there are going to be pockets of infection that will thrive on reopening and then people moving around from there will be a danger to us all.
