Pfizer jab 85pc effective after single dose, Israeli data reveals...

The Pfizer vaccine is 85 per cent effective after a single dose, an Isreali study has found as the country's top scientists endorsed the UK approach of giving out the jabs up to 12 weeks apart.

Researchers at Sheba Medical Centre gave one dose to 7,000 healthcare workers in January and found there was an 85 per cent reduction rate in Covid symptoms after 15-28 days, while overall infections - including asymptomatic cases - fell by 75 per cent.

Prof Arnon Afek, the deputy director general at Sheba, said the studies vindicated the UK's approach where there is a significant time delay between the first and second dose, as it shows that the first dose offers strong protection.

"This ground-breaking research supports the British government’s decision to begin inoculating its citizens with a single dose of the vaccine," he said.

Prof Eyal Leshem, Director of Sheba's Institute for Travel & Tropical Medicine added: "This is the first study assessing effectiveness of a single vaccine dose in real life conditions and shows early effectiveness, even before the second dose was administered."

I knew a single jab of the Astra Zeneca one was even more effective after 12 weeks than just 21 days and it now looks as though the Pfizer one is still effective with a longer interval too.

I know some leading scientists such as Professor Macron and the French foreign minister have been highly critical of our approach preferring the go slow or stop alternative, no doubt this will be kept under wraps in France

I get where you're coming from, but in the wider sense I refuse to let arithmetic choose which life is more valuable to save.
I think that is exactly what is happening.

I don't disagree as more lives are saved by targeting older people with the vaccine and that should be the priority. I think that there needs to be a bit of a balance though when you have certain groups that have to go to work (police, fire service and soon teachers). Assuming now that health workers have been jabbed.

I'm just glad you didn't call me a murderer. I know a man who might.

There are reports from Australia the isolation hotels used people literally got Covid from opening their hotel doors to collect food...
long covid is really not covered or spoken about enough, there are round 400,00 people to date according Covid select committee and long Covid is less likely to age or health discriminate.
Yes long Covid is definitely a worry. I read 10% of people in the 18-50 age group get it.

Not according Pizfer or World health organisation.

Can get you data and research that paracetamol is effective measure of treating cancer, that's how it goes.

It's been sad state of affairs that the UK has now engaged itself in politicalized science... It won't end, maybe not with this pandemic, but a precedent has been set now and a line crossed that took many scandals deaths and lives ruined to draw in the first place.

This isn`t the point I raised and the point I initially raised, was the one which you`ve conveniently tried to side step.

As per usual, you called the British government MURDERS for " planning " to send primary school age children back to school after March 8th.

However, you chose to completely ignore the fact, that two of your flavour of a month countries - Wales and N.Ireland, have announced dates for some primary school age children back to school some weeks before English children go back.

So, I`ll ask you once again, are the Welsh and N.Irish governments not MURDERS too ?
No. I called them murderers because we have 120,000 people dead in this country, and a large proportion of those deaths are down to their decisions. I call them out as the willing tools of corporate interets for wanting to rush through a school reopening programme in a 'big bang' way. That's what Johnson wants. They indulge in social murder, which is a charge that has been made against them, and that could be brought against this government in a court of law, as I understand it.

The school issue in NI and Scotland is different to England. In NI the public health agency there reveal transmission amongst primary kids to be not significant. In Scotland there will be a gradual and staggered return even within the primary school level. In short, they seem to be taking it more cautiously than the schedule Johnson wants - under pressure from forces within the Tory Party. If they reopen for all primary school age with transmission among that age group at a high level guess what happens to the overall levels of transmission currrenlty going down...yes, they start to rise again. But the Tories dont give a flying one, they just want their mates in big business to get their doors open again and start trading and they'll tell veryone the vaccines will take care of it.

I do find it strange you want to defend this government though. Why are you doing that?

Wonderful news.

I can't stand this government but you've got to admit that this approach has worked out.

Shame track and trace and everything else was a failure.

Long covid exists but it includes some relatively minor symptoms (along with some more serious issues). A lot of the 400,000 will have has issues with losing their sense of smell or will have felt lethargic for 8-12 weeks after having the virus. It would be more useful to know what percentage of the 400,000 have significant long term issues.

The only thing they can be judged on in terms of vaccine is the one they worked very closely with: AZ. That's not been the success story other vaccines have been. All they did with Pfizer was to order vaccine from them by dropping any legal indeminity to their vaccine going wrong - THAT's how they secured that vaccine.

In short: they deserve no praise on the vaccine front AT ALL.

They made th circumstances where we, above all other European nations, desperately needed vaccine because of this country's record and catastrophic fatality rate from Covid19.

Had my first jab Wednesday afternoon (AZ) and it’s knocked me sideways, just about feeling ok this morning. By late Wednesday evening I started shivering and feeling cold, then woke yesterday with a massive headache which lasted all day. I’m in pretty good health for my age, not allergic to anything, so was very surprised by this reaction. Bloody gnats piss lol

Exact same symptoms my ma had. She was fine after a couple of days.

Pfizer hasn't conducted any real world tests but was commenting on the pre production trials that just didn't test longer intervals and therefore couldn't be recommended by them. There is a difference between controlled trials before licencing and the actual data from their real world use.

The WHO was only reflecting the data (or lack of) then available, this is the actual situation from real life in Israel, it has however recommended the Astra Zeneca vaccine for over 65's, yet another policy endorsement which wouldn't have gone down too well with the French Professor aka President Macron.

Moan, moan, moan...bloody hell Dave, if they drove to your house and gave you the vaccine in your living room, from a golden syringe with your name on you’d complain they let the cold air in upon arrival.....
