On the plus side hopefully gives them the kick up the arse to expand testing. We were always likely to have community spread, saying ”we have contained this, its almost airtight” like Kudlow did yesterday was very head in sand given the worldwide spread and reported figures.

So UC Davis asked for testing last Wednesday, test finally given on Sunday and only today got the results.....not good.

Tbh there are people in this country that have pretty poor standards too and we are collectively only as strong as the weakest link.

I'm talking about the average. China does not have the same standard of hygiene practices as the UK.

lack of regulation in animal welfare is a major issue there, if the moral side of the argument isn't loud enough hopefully this will be an eye opener to the practical side

7.5 billion people and about 2,800 have died. The vast majority of people recover after contracting it.

Dont listen to the media. Dont listen to the people in charge. They just want docile, frightened populations.

Thats a good point, that wouldnt occur to me, but will obviously occur to medical folk.

2% of Merseyside's population is about 28000 people. Pandemic flu plans have likely mortality percentage and infection percentages included in them.

Worthwhile knowing for a variety of reasons.

You've said it is a risk to the elderly and people with underlying health issues, I'd say it is a pretty big deal to those people wouldn't you? You can't just divide up a portion of the population and say oh well you've had your chips. The rest of us don't care.

If your loved ones were old or susceptible I guess you would want other people not to take chances, such as swan off to an infected part of China and then come back and start breathing on everybody they know? That of course is me over exaggerating (hopefully) atypical behaviour. In reality I'm talking about washing their hands, self quarrenting at any sign of issues to hopefully reduce the spread. Everyone has a duty of care whether they think it's a big deal or not.

Just as any virus is, the common flu etc.

I'm not throwing anyone to the wolves. And by the way, the sensationalist reporting on this is probably accounting for a lot of ill health too, especially amongst the vulnerable.

There's a fine line to be trodden between informing and panicking people. That's not been found in the media.

The UK hygiene baseline is a bit of a movable feast sometimes...in fact I'd go so far as to say you can apply that to most of the first world
Many live in a sterilized hand gel world, thinking it makes them bullet proof...and if you put it in the fridge it'll last for ever
Anecdotal I know, but I get the impression many have lost - or never gained, many of the basic immunities we more mature posters had/have.
Back in the day hardly anybody (in any) was allergic to peanuts or had Asthma.

Are the powers that be:
A) Over reacting
B) Being cautious just in case
C) Both

Will only start getting worried when healthy 30-somethings start dying from this. Until then I will assume only the old/young/weak/ill will die from it.
