Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

Everyone dies from sommet. Most folk who jog off with "flu or flu like illness" have probably already swerved the nasty cancer ones, and going by the recent statistics, have a slow and steady decline into dementia to look forward to. Then they die from that.

But this Cornetto virus has me a bit baffled. The tweets from Merica that @LinekersLegs and @RAFUH post sound terrifying, but over here, its being said its not serious, unless you are ill anyrate, dead young, or dead old.

Dunno, Googles home page does keep me on my toes most nights with its fear-mongering.

Right now it is the potential for it being really bad that has folks worried. It might end up burning itself out -- we can hope.

It appears based on current data, the virus is quite contagious (like the flu) but more deadly.

In the US flu season 2019-2020, over 26 million with flu-like symptoms, over 250K have been admitted to hospital diagnosed with flu and 14K have died from flu related complications. That is with a mortality rate of 0.1% with a vaccine available.

Imagine the numbers without a vaccine and higher mortality rate (2% currently). Higher morality rate would also suggest more hospital admissions. Hospitals could be overwhelmed

All the spread and deaths from COVID19 have occurred within the context of significant even severe quarantining as well. Imagine what it would be like if that hadn't occurred.

The other issue is - the more wide spread and number of infected there are increases the likelihood it becomes endemic like the flu ie we have a COVID19 season every year with death rates higher than flu. Part of the effort to contain is for that reason.

Thats a good point, that wouldnt occur to me, but will obviously occur to medical folk.

I think some of my frustration is that the US seems very behind the curve (Uk has tested over 6000 people already iirc whilst we have less than 500), our president seems more interested in keeping the stock market happy than relaying accurate information and our healthcare system as a whole has some weaknesses that could make it very vulnerable.

Although as you say it is a virus that the majority of non elderly will survive the China data seemed to indicate to me (perhaps reading them wrong) that about 15% of cases are severe even in non vulnerable populations and need medical intervention eg respirators. Two weeks on a respirator, even if they are available in required numbers and you have medical coverage, would be financially very hard on most people.

The really sick folks need intubation and a respirator. Only a limited number of those and we still have to take care of all the other non-infectious illness that is always occurring. My hospital is routinely full during the peak of flu season

Definitely not considered serious here. Couple from our work came back from Northern Italy and were told to quarantine themselves at home for 2 weeks rather than come straight back to work. Sound serious. But by all means catch public transport via train, bus or both from the airport back to your home. Sounds not so serious.

Come back to me when it hits those numbers.

And what on earth would you want me to say if it does, Goat? "Lol you're wrong m8 loads more people have died than you thought they would".

Look, I get it, the media is prone to hysterical freakouts and there have been loads down the years but this virus appears to be astronomically more contagious than the flu. The flu kills about 0.10% of people who catch it, this is up at around 3%. Unfortunately a lot of people who get it seem to need serious critical care and there's currently no vaccine.

That all needs to be caviated with the fact the Communists in China tried to cover it up at first, thus making it's impact worse, and with respect to any Chinese blues reading this, China is the one of dirtiest and most densely populated places on earth, so the numbers are going to be more severe there.

The main concern for me isn't even the virus though, it's the reaction from people to the virus if numbers start to scale in the UK. I think we are probably all pretty underpreared.

Anyway, in reality, nobody has a clue how this will play out. It's speculation but there's a sensible place between WE ARE ALL GOING TO DIE and IT'S NO WORSE THAN THE FLU LAD.

I mean I largely agree with your post but you’ve just labelled a country about the size of the states as being dirty and densely populated. Britain is more densely populated I believe. It’s these fairly lazy generalisations that help no one and are breeding xenophobic reporting.

Think he is talking about the cities mate, which are far more densely packed than ours.
