Still very different fatality rates between Italy and S Korea
Italy has confirmed 322 cases of the virus, the Italian civil protection agency said Tuesday. That's the highest number of coronavirus infections outside Asia.
The cases are heavily concentrated in the region of Lombardy where 212 infections have been confirmed. The authorities said Tuesday evening that 11 people have so far died from the virus in the country.

893 confirmed cases 8 deceased.
Aren't the Italians the folk who live the oldest on the planet? Maybe they have more at risk older people, think all the deaths there have been unfortunate old timers 70+.

Yeah, age profile of population could be the cause, certainly China data indicated the over 70s are sadly very vulnerable. Could also be S Korea testing program is very good so they have a better handle on how many actually infected.

Hopefully more data over the next few days will make things clearer.

The UAE has issued a travel ban to Thailand and Iran following the outbreak of coronavirus.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation issued a statement on Monday banning its citizens from travelling to Thailand and Iran due to concerns of the COVID-19 outbreak in both countries. The statement reads: “In light of the UAE’s efforts to monitor and contain the spread of the new coronavirus, COVID-19, and in the interest of general public safety and health, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation has issued a travel ban, calling on all UAE citizens not to travel to Iran and Thailand at present and up until further notice.

“UAE citizens currently in these countries are requested to contact the UAE Embassy or the Ministry's call centre on 800 44444, and register on the ministry's 'Tawajudi' service”. The news comes after Kuwait’s civil aviation authority also on Monday announced it was suspending all flights to and from Thailand.

The move was in accordance with guidelines from the Kuwaiti Health Ministry, officials said. Kuwait also suspended flights between Iraq, Italy and South Korea. The ban comes despite Thailand reporting no new cases of coronavirus in more than one week. At the time of publishing, Thailand has reported 35 cases of coronavirus, with 21 patients having already been discharged after making a full recovery. 14 patients remain in hospital in Thailand.

There have been no deaths from coronavirus in Thailand so far.

Snap AV: CoronavirUS

Jefferies have been on top of the COVID-19 threat these past few days, and have another note out today on what would happen if if the virus began to take hold Stateside.

The investment bank thinks Trump would not choose to stem an urban outbreak via a quarantine zone, given it may both spook markets and that a strong economy is bound to be one of his main talking points in the coming election.

Yet that wasn’t the most interesting part, this snippet caught our eye:
USA - if you don't test for it, you probably won't find it - Originally, doctors in the US were advised not to test people unless they had been to China or had contact with someone who had been diagnosed with the disease. Within the past two weeks, the CDC said it would start to use the national flu surveillance tracking infrastructure to test patients who have flu symptoms for COVID-19 in five cities across the US. But elsewhere, tests are still not widely available. Recently, the Association of Public Health Laboratories said that only California, Nebraska, and Illinois had the capacity to test people for the virus. Compare this with Singapore and S. Korea, which have carried out significant testing.
Out of sight, out of mind is not a bad rule-of-thumb if you’re dealing with a difficult break-up. But when it comes to a potential pandemic, we’re not quite so sure it’s the right answer.

A quick thought on the economic consequences: we know that American healthcare deductibles are ludicrously expensive for both the uninsured and the insured so, if we do see a breakout Stateside, what happens to the mighty US consumer?

In such circumstances, it’s not crazy to venture that Medicare-For-All might suddenly seem a bit more appealing to the free-market, huddled masses.
