I don't really see foreign holidays happening again this summer.

But I don't see why domestic holidays shouldn't be allowed if things keep improving come the summer. Plus it will be good for local economies if they get some sort of trade this summer.

The reality is that no one really knows.

Spain and Greece are already saying that they want a tourist season, as their economies won’t be able to withstand another year like last year.

It depends as much on their vaccination program, as much as ours.

You would need some bloody good insurance if you went there.

Maybe I'm giving the tories to much credit, but me and a mate were talking about this yesterday.
Everyone knows that there is a huge pent up demand for holidays or anything recreational.
The collective amount of money that the public will be prepared to throw at holidays after this
pandemic will be off the scale. So why not have that money spent in the UK to boost the British economy
rather than in Spain or anywhere else overseas? An easy & quick way to do this is to basically ensure
that overseas holidays are not available.... Boom!
As a side note, my mate likes his holidays - a lot. He spends serious money on them. He started to look for
a cottage for him and his wife down in Cornwall for a week in August. He had a budget of £2,500 just to hire
the cottage. No chance! The bare minimum he reckons is now £5,000 for a week and when he did find
something he liked the price was £7,500 for a week (and absolutely no guarantee of the weather)!
They obviously knocked it on the head and they have decided they will wait and go to the Maldives
for 10 days all inclusive next Christmas / New Year and he reckons he'll have change out of the £7,500.

Thats fine if you don't mind spending £3000 for a week in Blackpool in a caravan because that's what will happen.

Hard to find anything in the Lake District for less than £200 a night from June - September. Prices have gone through the roof.

As long as they aren't opening schools and pushing propaganda against their union without a plan to protect the teachers. I believe their death rate is twice the nation average, they aren't alone in that but there should at least be some honesty about it

Yeah I agree with all that but it doesn't really change anything.

A teacher is more likely to get infected, but it doesn't mean they're more likely to end up in the hospital than if they get it than a retired 70-year-old, does it...

There might have been a balance to strike but they haven't done it by occupation unless it's frontline NHS / care workers. Other than that, it's just about levels of vulnerability isn't it

Foreign trips have to happen.
I want to visit family in August in Spain.
The issue with boosting UK economy is its so dependent on weather and if numbers inside activities are restricted and its pissing down people won't behave nor will business and it will be a car crash.

As an aside, my local hospital has announced the inpatient total has halved in a fortnight for covid.
Tellingly the percentage of community positive tests in over 60s has also dropped sharply.

I read that there was about a million school staff (teaching and support etc).

These could be done in two to three days with current rates. Dramatically making schools safer. Social distancing is almost impossible all the time.

That pushes the timeline back a couple of days for a demographic that can stay at home.

Plus, out of that million, how many people might have underlying health issues that they are unaware of?
