Think supermarket workers should be higher up. They have had to go in throughout every lockdown.
But, and I don't mean to sound blunt, just because they work in an area where they are obviously more likely to run the risk of being exposed, does not make an individual more likely to die if they contract the virus.
They aren't doing it on likelihood of contracting it, because as we know they still think you can get infected even if vaccinated, but it does stop illness.
They're doing it on whether or not if you do get infected, you're likely gonna end up in hospital.
It's different with frontline NHS staff. If they get infected, they can't work, and that could/would result in less people being able to treat patients, which = more death, from COVID or anything else.
Other than that, they've decided to go with people who are more vulnerable to the illness first.
Now, those groups include people of all ages and in terms of doing it through the age range, it's now all the over 70s who are getting contacted. In 2 weeks' time it's likely gonna be the over 60s. All the while, people in every age range who are considered vulnerable are getting their jabs too.
There's no sure fire solution but there'll be plenty of teachers, supermarket workers etc who are in these groups too. I'm sure plenty of supermarket workers and teachers are over 50, for example, and will be due their first jab by late May (conservative estimate).
I hope that makes sense? I definitely see the point you're making, but they've done it on if you're gonna die or, frankly, take up a ventilator if you catch this thing. And that makes the virus a lot less dangerous, if the people it is more likely statistically to do the damage to have that level of protection.
