Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

They didn't actively start a virus. Just as the Americans didn't actively start the Spanish Flu.

Their government did cloud - and are still doing - anybody's ability to assess the seriousness of it until it was far too late, though...

They also silenced doctors and journalists reporting on the outbreak at the onset of it.

They also left the entire nation bar Wuhan open for Chinese New Year at the end of January, a month after the first confirmed case (and that was just the first confirmed one).

If you can't blame them for starting it (which is fair - I don't, I just think the conditions it reportedly started in could have been mitigated, given it was 2019 and not 1919) then at least accept they did the rest of the world no favours, and the WHO were either blind-sided too or next to useless.

No reason that 20,000 shouldn't be allowed into Goodison come September given the vaccine roll out (majority of the country will be fully dosed by then) and you can easily just make sure they have to have proof of a negative test to enter.
How would you safely put on an event for 20,000? Football, music or otherwise?

How do you know.....

How do I know the Chinese - the new superpower reliant on trade to spread its tentacles around the globe and control spheres of influence - wouldn't purposely create and unleash a virus that stopped world trade?

Oh, just a wild guess. :coffee:

@davek not sure if you've deleted your post but, in the very specific circumstance of a football match, let's say at Goodison Park, in September this year, to have a 20,000 crowd (so half capacity give or take).

You set it up in a similar way to how the 2,000 capacity ones were done, just on a slightly larger scale.

You limit it to season ticket holders (I assume we have at least that many), all done in the same way in a ballot.

You run the same testing scheme as was done in December. There's testing centres literally everywhere in the towns and cities, there's one 5 mins from mine which has been set up 2 months now. Easy to use and you get your result back within a day.

You have to have the proof of the negative test to enter the ground. Have to have your mask on while entering the ground and also when moving around. You're in your socially distanced groups and when you sit down you can take your mask off.

You're outside, the entire vulnerable population of the UK is by now fully vaccinated (or has been offered both doses) and the vast majority of the country has also had both doses by then if this current rate continues.

If you don't try it then, then you might as well never try it.

I mean, as far as I'm aware, trade didn't stop?

There's no doubting that China's economy has done okay compared to most other nations. And I don't believe they started it on purpose. I do believe they attempted to cover it up at first, because that's what that government does, and is proven to do. Like our government is proven to make mistakes and false promises.

So definitely wasn't a lab they created it in then? You seemed in two minds about that earlier.

No one said they did it on purpose.

I've said numerous times I think it more likely that it was the wet markets. The fact they were reportedly working on things in the labs does lead to the possibility that perhaps it wasn't fully natural though. There's a reason that they've been investigated. But that doesn't mean that it was done on purpose either. Could easily, in that case, have been somebody at the lab becoming unknowingly infected and passing it on that way. We don't - and won't - know for sure, so I think it's fairer to say that we go with the more likely one of the wet markets, which themselves are seen as the most likely because of their frankly abhorrent conditions and the history of diseases spreading in and from them...

But it's 'cultural', so it's alright, is it? It's our culture that's wrong, yeah.

I dunno, there seems to be a LOT of anti-Chinese hate going around.

Ive recently started a new game, which has a pretty vast Chinese population, I've seen quite a lot of racism aimed their way with regards them "starting covid".

There really needs to be a shift from blaming China, otherwise things like this will only grow.

For me the Chinese are as much to blame as the Spanish were last time around.

They didn't actively start a virus. Just as the Americans didn't actively start the Spanish Flu.

They caused SARS by doing the exact things they did with COVID. Ie allowing wet markets to carry on unchecked and allowing animal viruses to jump to humans.

It's like someone who drives at 100mph and gets busted for it... but does it again and kills someone.

You have zero proof that wet markets caused this.

And how are the Chinese wet markets any different to the chicken batteries, the pig farms and the cow sheds we have in this country?

apart from the last pandemic... which was SHOCK HORROR a coronavirus that jumped from bats to Civets and to people

Hmmm.... i wonder if bats were in Wuhan?

Those are domestic animals that are regulated, and vets work on.

Wild animals are a whole new ball game
