Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

They tried to go back to normal without a vaccine. They were wrong.

Why will there be mass death every year? Do we not currently have a vaccination programme underway?

The issue is that when you say behaviour needs to change, do you mean in regards to how we function as a society in a global pandemic? Yes I'm sure a majority of people do agree with that. Global pandemics don't exactly happen every year do they? So really are you talking about change in general to a society which you personally would more like to see, irrespective of a pandemic?

I'm very curious to know what an acceptable level of death is from coronavirus or any other virus that you would accept in the years to come? Whitty said just the other week that society will eventually reach a level of death it is prepared to tolerate in order to function as a society where preventing death is not the only purpose of existence. I'm guessing for you that level is zero. But I would argue that a majority of people would say that if our sole priority in society becomes saving/extending lives then we might as well call it existing rather than living as we won't be making the most of our lives. I am prepared to do as much as I can up to the point where it negatively impacts my own life. Everyone will have that line. I'm confident in saying that your line is probably much further along than mine. In a global pandemic, I know my line doesn't matter. But once the vaccine has been rolled out across the country I'm pretty sure people won't be prepared to put their own lives on hold or have them negatively impacted, or accept more state interference in their lives than what has occurred since March 2020.
That's such a confused post.

Why does saving as many lives as possible equate to just existing? I'm not sure how you made that leap.

What sort of number of human beings (the family and friends of other people and each with their own hopes, goals, ambitions and cherished memories) are you willing to sacrifice in the near future? Give me a ball park annual figure.

Im never coming for tea at yours!

Pretty sure what ever you want, I have it somewhere.

This happened yesterday, when we settled on what we, well she, fancied for supper.

"Anything special you want from Sainsburys Nik?"

"Frozen sausage rolls, the little party ones".

Now we have had sausage rolls before, but never as a single thing.

First time I’ve seen this sort of advice.
“We do not recommend premedication with ibuprofen or Tylenol before COVID-19 vaccines due to the lack of data on how it impacts the vaccine-induced antibody responses,” Dr. Simone Wildes, an infectious disease specialist at South Shore Medical Center and a member of Massachusetts’ COVID-19 Vaccine Advisory Group, told ABC News.

The side effects from the vaccines are caused by activation of the immune system, meaning that the immune system is working and starting to build immunity to COVID-19 -- this is what we want. These pain relievers may prevent parts of the immune system from working and slow down the immune response. There is a theory that taking these medications before immunization may reduce their effectiveness.

A study from Duke University found that children who took pain relievers before getting their childhood vaccines had fewer antibodies than those who did not take the medications, which could mean less protection. However, there were still protective antibody levels, despite the blunting.

I know.

I have never seen her eat a banana, let alone have one in a sarnie. I peeled the first one on Tuesday, and I reckon its the first banana I have ever peeled in my life.

It was fresh crab and a dressing the other week. Again, we have never eaten crab, but finding some, post brexit/in pandemic, was an achievement!

Plain chocolate bounty bars the other week. Again, never had them.
Is she pregnant mate ?

The AZ vaccine is 100% proven to be effective against stopping severe disease and preventing hospitalisation too.

What's the difference?

BTW, I'm obviously thrilled that there's another vaccine on the way, and Novovax not far behind possibly. It's great news. The more the bettter.

As the EU regulator has concluded, the reason they will sanction it even now with scant evidence of its value is that other vaccines have provided at least some coverage, so they expect the AZ vaccine to provide some too. On that basis the absence of persuasive data of the efficacy of that vaccine for older groups will be set aside, though they will be looking to gain that information from the recent roll out. It wll be very interesting to see how many of the AZ vaccine is taken up. Germany have good options so wont touch it.

That was about the efficacy. It has been 100% proven to protect against severe illness and hospitalisation. The question is over infection in the older age groups - due to the small(ish) (I still think 8% of a sample spread being an 11-year gap isn't that small, but smaller than liked) - and that's why the German regulator has advised against it.

We should start seeing data from the UK any time soon, surely (or at least from the first jab).

Infection rates continuing to drop, but that could be as much down to restrictions etc as the vaccine so we don't know yet for sure.

Germany will be all over it like a tramp on chips....they already have a stash of other vaccine and will take anything they can get their hands on.....

No, people are telling what they see.

I honestly didn't note down all the shops that were open, but I was shocked that only Primark was closed in my area.

As I say, we have different versions of whats essential.

In March when we locked down everybody I know, bar my daughter, wasn't working, this time around every single person I know is still going to work.

Different places as you say.....

100% of a small cohort of volunteers.

The EU regulator - rightly - will keep a sharp eye on the results coming back in from the field.

Tory Lockdown. Keep loads of places open and kill as many people as you can.

Yes, and that will happen AFTER substantial data is back in about AZ's performance in older groups.

Imagine a government trying to protect its population?
