The deaths are grim, but cases are falling re infections.

Cases are falling very slowly, also cases falling could be related to the christmas rush for testing being over.

This is absolutely horrendous and is going to be very very bad for quite some time. I thought we might be out of lockdown in April but now i believe June/July is much more likely.

Vaccinations are the only way out now.

Is it possible that the elevated death numbers are due to this being the worst few weeks for deaths generally?

i.e There were 14,058 deaths w/e 10th Jan 2020 compared to 7,739 w/e 4th Sep 2020
There will be some correlation but the death figures are horrendous make no mistake. The tory sponsored free for all at Christmas has left us in a very real crisis.

This isn't happening - The top 6 daily numbers of tests have all been from this year (The highest being the 8th Jan)

Cases are falling, it's a start.

Tell me about it - I'm just looking for any shred of positivity in this whole thing

The days seem to be getting longer as we go on :(

Every single hour, thousands of the most vulnerable are getting jabbed. Every day.

Its crap, and like everyone on the planet pretty much, I view this through my own experience/life style.

But that thought works for me. Tomorrow will make this go away a bit nearer.

Still making excuses that this is not very serious, that it's all being over done?

It is a disaster, a combination of government ineptitude and public lack of discipline.

Fair enough, I suppose thats a minor positive as its a reduction but the numbers are still huge. We are months and months away from lockdown being weakened.

Well, we know that.

It's gonna be March, at least.

But the vaccination roll out is picking up pace. We're vaccinating at a far quicker rate than any comparable nation. So let's just keep on doing what we're doing.

There's a two-week lag in deaths. And you also have to keep in mind that these are deaths counted from up to 28 days ago too (ultimately it all results in the same thing mind).

What we're seeing now is the result of Christmas. Whatever the government did or didn't do, they didn't force people to have Xmas parties etc.

In 2 weeks' time, we have to just keep hoping that the lockdown has started to have its impact.

Hoo boy the figures make really really depressing reading today, I get it’s a lot of backdating but for the most part it’s only going back a week

Hospital figures - 1154 deaths were announced today (the largest hospital total since early summer), up 374 on yesterday and up 375 on last Wednesday. 1012 deaths were in English hospitals, up 265 on yesterday and up 338 on last week. The 7 day rolling average rises to 798.29

All settings - for the 28 day cut off, 1564 deaths were announced today, up 321 on yesterday and up 523 on last Wednesday. The 7 day rolling average rises to 1060.14

For the 60 day cut off, 1737 deaths were announced today, up 387 on yesterday and up 589 on last Wednesday. The 7 day rolling average rises to 1155.57

A reaction to these numbers would be daft. There is nothing more that can be done right now, at this minute, short of bolting people's doors shut (which some people would like) to get the numbers down. The deaths are from people who got this in December and at Christmas.

They are grim, horrendous, horrendous numbers. They will mostly be in London and the south east and that is all on the gov. putting that area in Tier 2 at the start of December. Look at Yorkshire, cases generally staying down in the areas that have been in Tier 3 all along. Another avoidable mistake but nobody in the media or any MP called it out at the time and the country is paying the price for that selfish, London-centric attitude.
