15% rise on five-year average death figures

We reported a few minutes ago on newly-released figures for excess deaths in the UK during 2020.
Last year saw an increase above the five-year average number of deaths of about 15% - nearly 91,000 registered deaths.
But what does "excess deaths" mean?
It means the number of deaths above what we might expect to see in normal circumstances.
To work it out, you take the number of people who have died from any cause in a given period of time - a week or a month, say. You can then compare that with the average number of deaths that occurred in the same period usually over the previous five years.
It is one of the best measures of judging the death toll from coronavirus.
Don't worry, it's just the flu.

The risk outdoors is almost zero and it has been all along. I have heard of loads of companies that are making their staff go to the office even though they could work from home. There needs to be a focus on making businesses comply with the rules. Smaller construction companies for example seem to force all of their admin staff to go in when they could easily work from home.
Because they, the bosses, know that working from home is one of the biggest skive offs ever. And there plenty of bosses who will judge others by what they themselves would do if they could get away with it

Biggest pain I've experienced outside of the reduced work is the parenting side of things.

Used to always take 1-2 days a month out with the missus to go for a meal or my favourite which would be a round of mini golf at ghetto golf in town followed by some grub and a few cocktails round Seel Street.

Without that there is no release from the drudgery of domestic life.

You can still have date nights with your partners you just need to be more creative than a restaurant.

I am not a cyclist, but isn't being 7 miles from home fairly normal? I've heard of people I know who go on like 50km rides.

Yeah I mean I clock up some serious miles.

Also there's no actual rule on staying anywhere within your local area to a specific distance. You could walk seven miles away.

The guidance is to stop people driving to other locations and then doing their exercise. 7 miles on a bike can be done in 20-25 mins, if you're on the flat stuff.

Also, you can easily do a 50km ride by staying within a 10km radius of your own at all times pretty much too.

Surprise your partner over the sink, or, if its sturdy enough, the kitchen table...never fails to impress...especially if you do that, dramatically sweep all the stuff on to the floor, thing...not your dinner though.
They love all that mussy romantic stuff

It's really pretty irrelevant how far someone goes out walking, running, or cycling, as long as they stay away from others.

I go quite far from home on my run if I'm feeling in the mood but I'm by myself so I don't see the problem.

Not outside the house! That’s the problem...

Not for the last couple of weeks but before that you could. It's still possible, like I say, you just have to be creative.

I don't live with my missus but we have a glass jar filled with folded paper with date ideas written on them. Not all of them involve leaving the house; maybe half.

Quick Google search pops up 30 ideas here alone: https://www.goodhousekeeping.com/life/relationships/advice/g1598/indoor-date-night-ideas/?slide=23
