It's not killing kids though. The statistics aren't bearing that out.

This has been in circulation since September and there's been no statistical increase in mortality to children, or any deviation from the normal mortality rate by age.

But what do kids have? Almost constant close contact with adults. They're super spreaders.

'course. They're catching it, spreading it (despite the stupidity we got told last year about them possibly doing neither, which would have been a Jesus-esque miracle), but they're not dying from it.

I have a kid going to nursery next week and I'm dreading it. Nursery is optional but I know how critical early child development is, so it's a horrible decision to make. I'm going to have to make a call on it.

To respond to this post and your one to me, I agree that there has probably been some exaggeration from an exhausted and frustrated health care worker. You probably saw/heard the other five live clip from yesterday where a doctor said (I’m paraphrasing) that if you didn’t wear a mask/social distance you had blood on your hands. That OTT language (whether you agree with the substance or not) can have the desired effect of instilling some fear and subsequent compliance into people but it can also backfire and have negative repercussions which is what we’re seeing now with general lockdown/restriction fatigue. You keep telling people the sky is falling in and unless it happens to them, then they don’t care anymore.

One thing which could get people focused again however is if children were seriously starting to be seriously effected by this. If statistics and stories were to come out indicating this then the case for a lockdown with all schools closed would be undeniable.

Indeed, but key word is "if". Right now, there's no evidence at all for it - indeed there's more evidence that kids get hit harder by the flu than COVID.

So right now an emotional radio call in can be disregarded given there's no actual evidence to back up her claims. It might feel hard for her personally but she's basically in a war zone situation right now, so exhaustion, panic and fear can alter her rationale.

As it stands, the situation with kids is simply about being super spreaders. To quote a completely random tweet that just happens to nail it...

It really is this. There's an element of child protection in regards to education being important, but another month or two isn't going to be the end of the world for them. But the reality is the economic hit is the reason schools aren't closing nationally.

It certainly is difficult but the same can be said for every stage of school and Pre school.

This disease is an absolute nightmare... I hope these vaccines actually work!

It is alarming, because the public need confidence in the vaccine.

I really do get the logic with what the UK are doing - it's 90% protection after the first dose of the Pfizer one after all and 95% after the recommended second dose, so not much difference - but this isn't a time for guesswork with science; it's a time to lean on any and all evidence as hard as possible, and I feel it's an own goal to not do so.

Given the multiple failures in messaging during the past few months there is undoubtably a lot of value in just sticking with what you originally communicated rather adding extra confusion/doubt into the mix.

People are acting like there is loads of vaccine about. There isn't.

We need to get as many people immune now.

If London are shutting primary schools, so should the rest of the country.

The reason they aren't doing isn't evidence led; it's political.
I’m absolutely astounded that our children will be piling into schools on Monday after mixing throughout Christmas, during a time when there is a far more transmissible strain. This is a recipe for disaster. Will this government ever act proactively?

But there are valid questions of what % level of immunity you have after one dose and how long that lasts if you don’t have a booster within the timeframe we already have data for.

There is also an added complication in that it might not be the same for the AZ vaccine compared to the Pfizer/Moderna.
