Which would be (and I’m not having a go at you here) such an admission of failure by the Government.

All subsequent lockdowns after the first one would not have been necessary with an effective and rapid track, trace and isolate system, one that didn’t require you to have a car and sufficient savings (and an understanding boss) to do what society required.

That they’ve still not sorted that out is, to use @davek phrasing, criminal. It was bad enough in August but now it’s unforgivable.

I don't disagree, but look at Germany.

They had 'the best in the world', and they're in ultra-strict lockdown.

One gp surgery has told sky news that only 12%!!! Of people have taken up the vaccine offer as they want ot get Xmas out if the way first.

Selfish old barstewards. Millions of people putting their lives on hold to protect them and they give us the middle finger.

I'd inject them with something else beginning with C when they have gotten themselves ready

Pretty sure I read that Sweden have nor benefited economically from their approach in comparison to those that locked down.
Yeah it isn't actually a positive for the economy to do nothing because a portion of the population is still going to decide not to get the deadly virus and not spend money as a result.

I wouldn’t call their tracing best in the world. They did quite well with testing though. Their tracing was already overwhelmed 4-6 weeks ago.

Which is a fact many on here, online etc who were critical (rightly so) of the UK's track and trace didn't say. It was all painted as a perfect picture everywhere else but here.

The UK have - as of late, as in the last few months - done pretty well with testing. That's why cases are higher - more people are getting tested efficiently.

The 'trace' part relies on a lot of stuff and I'm not saying that the UK did it right. But clearly, nowhere in Europe has got it right, or they wouldn't be back into lockdown.

Full lockdown after the new year until Easter, get the infection rate and hospitalisations right down, administer the vaccine as widely as possible. That surely has to be the game plan.

And have millions more people out of work, depressed, their entire lives in ruin...

Fear. Fear and more fear.

I'm not defending our useless government, not one bit, or every useless government. But we do that, and there's not much to come back to after.

Flu season + Covid19 will overwhelm the NHS.

I suppose there's a choice: keep the economy churning on and have bodies piling up in morgues or denying this virus bodies to infect and innoculating against it.

We're currently in the middle of flu season. There are more free beds right now - not counting Nightingale hospitals - than there were this time last year. This time last year, when we supposedly had one of the worst flu seasons we've had, which was clearly down to covid being present here this time last year and we just had no idea.

There is no choice between the economy and health. It ends up merging into one.

I'm not on about not being able to go to the pub. We can all manage. But the person who owns that pub, and the people that supply said pub, and the people that supply them...

Then who will want to open a new business after this? A new independent shop or cafe? You'd have to be mental.

It all goes on and on and on.

Hospital figures - 397 deaths were announced today, down 41 on yesterday and up 29 on last Friday. 317 deaths were in English hospitals, down 23 on yesterday and up 42 on last week. The 7 day rolling average rises to 340.43

All settings - for the 28 day cut off, 489 deaths were announced today, down 43 on yesterday and up 65 on last Friday. The 7 day rolling average rises to 433.57

For the 60 day cut off, 586 deaths were announced today, down 4 on yesterday and up 108 on last Friday. The 7 day rolling average rises to 500.57

Unless something remarkable happens it’s clear as night follows day that we’re heading for another lockdown and plenty of more Covid deaths.

Never mind though, we’ll all get the opportunity to celebrate Christmas with Grandma and Uncle Fred before they pass on at the hands of Covid-19...which they caught at the family Christmas do!

Merry Christmas Everyone!

We're living through a pandemic. You cant just crack on. Your argument 40 years ago would have been seen for the nonsense it is - that was prior to the brain washing of the public to believe we should order our society through neo-liberalism and give 'all importance' to the market.

The sound and fury over lockdowns are due to the state recognising that we cant just go on as normal and let the market dictate. That's seen them butting heads with corporate interests and market ideologues. In a public health crisis neo-liberal policies have had to be reined in and neutered - for the time being at least. And we should be going further still. The state can pay for this crisis. That's what its there for.
