Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

Looking at how NZ have ended their pandemic, I think it's quite clear what all other countries need to do, something that NZ did and are sticking to. Close the borders to travel. Its gonna be worse this Xmas too all over UK and Ireland there will be people coming in from literally all over the world to see their families and friends. Lockdowns etc are useless if we keep the floodgates open.

Even with meeting in groups of six outside, right now I know I can but my mindset is that I don't want to jeopardise Christmas for my family - priorities.

Many people are going to be reckless over Christmas and in reality the only outcome will be further restrictions down the line.

Once the spread has got to a certain level its very difficult to do anything. Australia had major cities closed for about 5 months even though they had very low cases at the outset. You could close down the UK for two months and it still might not work.

Cases from travel will be a drop in the ocean, not many countries have case numbers like the UK. If anything other countries should stop people from the UK from visiting.

The point was about international travel. If you stopped international travel tomorrow we'd be in the exact same position with cases sky high across the country. Stopping someone coming back from Dubai or whatever isn't going to fix anything.

If they stopped travel in March with other measures it might have had some impact but now it wouldn't make any measurable difference.

An interesting read if you haven’t seen it already. Charting the spread of COVID in households and how it has been somewhat ignored. Some interesting bits in terms of asymptotic spread of the disease being very low (although the research admits its flawed there) but again, is COVID being spread rapidly because of poor living standards in this country - I.e small, poorly ventilated and overcrowded dwellings?

People got far too relaxed when cases went down over summer. Not enough prep was done by governments for what was coming when the weather cooled down

Yeah it's pretty mad. Hard to see where all the infections are coming from. I guess just not enough done in October and November. That article talks a lot about November but also October was pretty bad. Temperatures dropped and there were hardly any restrictions at that time. Hopsitality has been shut down since Nov but still cases going up. Weird. Must be private parties and schools I guess. Can't think of anything else.
