Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

At the same time

You are ruling out any possibility that anyone who has died with covid (28 days) would have lived anyway.

It doesn't have to be black and white. Seems nobody likes to hit a middle ground on the subject. It's either killing a lot of people who would have died or its killing noone that would have died.

Perhaps it's both? Perhaps a lot of people who have died to covid died despite the positive test , or were dying anyway given the average age and significant amount of underlying health issues. But that's not all of them and there are thousands who have also died before they would have otherwise.
There has to be a definitive criteria for recording these deaths. The reporting now does state deaths within 28 days rather than deaths from covid.
I don't know how they arrived at 28 days. Maybe that's up to how long people held on for in the first wave.
I think most people understand that this will catch people that died of completely unrelated issues to covid (accidents etc.).
As long as the criteria is kept the same we can compare the trends in the numbers more easily.
It's obvious that it's still out there, easily transmitted and fatal for many which is why we need to be careful. Not because of Boris but because carelessness can cause the death of others.

Hai Arkansas!

"We've got a task force set up for the Winter to help us get this under control, and we'll listen to their recommendations." - Asa Hutchinson governor

"What if they recommend a shutdown?" - Reporters

"We don't want them recommending that. We're not gonna do a shutdown." - Asa Hutchinson

In my most southern 'merican accent.

"To reduce covid deaths we will stop testing for the disease and shoot dead anyone who comes within 20 feet of a hospital. Doing this we are sure we can be the first state to get covid deaths down to zero."

Something like 85-90% of deaths occurred with 28 days of the first positive test.

David Rose in the Mail has properly gone after the government today - it may be in retaliation for Cummings, but still:

The Daily Mail today unearths a recurring pattern where experts' advice is ignored, and vast sums are thrown at untried 'solutions' when apparently cheaper, better ones were at hand. Our investigation shows:
  • Key figures in the Government's new laboratories – the Lighthouse Network – starved established NHS labs of resources, say health department sources.
  • Many of accountant Deloitte's management consultants – brought in at huge expense to deliver the Government's new testing network rather than to use existing NHS labs – had no healthcare experience, and instead had backgrounds in fields such as printing banknotes.
  • Deloitte's daily log reveals that when the Lighthouse labs started operating, they were given dispensation from meeting official standards.
  • Ministers repeatedly rebuffed a world-class IT group which has developed a low-cost, patented test and trace app in favour of what has proved to be a failed option.
  • Unknown testing firms have won deals worth hundreds of millions without competition or effective scrutiny.

Massive protest on College Green in Bristol just now as I popped out to the Coop.

Stood watching it with a couple of police and we were in agreement that they are human garbage.

Mostly students doing their best to spread a virus amongst the general population. Selfish scum.

Had no idea you lived in Bristol, or more likely, I forgot. Got some biblical rain heading your way.

I was in South London until April then fled the virus to be with my girlfriend and decided to move back permanently.

Lived here before for a couple of years which is where we met and it never stopped feeling like home.

Homes are like family I guess. You have the one you're born with and the one you choose and so although Liverpool is where I was born and I still have family, Bristol is my home and I'm very happy to be back.

And yes torrential rain today and last night! Although it was dry this morning, had a nice walk up to the Downs and down Whiteladies and then the rain hit hard again on Park St but luckily only 5 mins from home.

Went on a bike ride to round your way in Portishead couple of months ago, first time I'd been, lovely place.

There were a few hundred people today at the protest if I had to guess, walking around the Green with banners and all shouting different slogans at the same time in a bizarre cacophony of nonsense. Then the march took off down towards the harbour to irritate and infect more people. Strange way to spend a Saturday.

Remember now!

Magic isnt it? Get to see the Marina?

Haha yeah lockdown has been pretty good to me so far, or at least accelerated a change from man child to semi-responsible adult anyway.

Yeah it's absolutely beautiful, only did a whistle-stop tour because we were actually on the way to Clevedon but I'd always wanted to see it. So when the sun is shining again we plan to properly make a day of it. Clevedon marina is amazing too, love swimming in the sea water. It was all very well done with social distancing in the summer too.

That pier was featured in a One Direction video! Regular gaggles of fans gather there, Abbey Road lite. (My ex/lad live nearby).

And Clevedon sea front was used in a Beatles video, that one they cobbled together a few years ago. And if parts of the town felt familier, they filmed the Broadchurch episodes there.

Oh wow that's interesting, I'll have to see if I notice next time. To be fair I was mostly concerned about coughing my lungs up on the sea front after cycling over the hills ha.

lol

Next time, try the flat route! Same as Portishead!

There was a diversion which took us up an Everest of a hill and took forever. When we went the next time we realised they only diverted under a little 50 metre tunnel which would have took seconds instead of the endless climb during which I had a tantrum and threw my bike in a bush.

The flat route is definitely recommended :)

Did the hill cross the motorway?
