My tiny mind cannot grasp why anyone would go to a supermarket just to browse.

A secondhand record shop I get. But Sainsburys? Dont get it.
You’d be surprised mate, there’s a lot of lonely people about and a daily visit to the supermarket is a lifeline for some. My Mrs tells me about the same poor people who come in at the same time everyday and spend hours just walking around and exchanging a short conversation with others.

I was thinking the same thing, they`re hell on earth and you just want to get in and get out as quickly as possible.

Yep. And now the cheese counter has been closed, cos of Covid, the only place where I might have been tempted to linger for more than 30 seconds has gone anyrate.

Never really got why cheese counters were such a danger neither.

Oh its the highlight of my day mate. Still get in and out rapid like though.

Just a 30 second zap to warm them up.* My point being that without a defined list of what is and isn’t essential, it’s far too subjective.

*A joke before anyone cries.
I think that the wg maybe should have set up a hotline for accessing emergency items for those that are unable to purchase online.

Aye, that could work.

A helpline for people who really are desperate, and could be worked through local councils. Yet logistically, how long would it take to setup and be effective?

While it is rightly based on wanting to make a fair and level playing field, I just feel that the whole thing (non-essential embargo) is all a bit of a minefield.

If it's just in the short-term, let the supermarkets keep selling stuff; if it's in the long-term, the above idea would be best with time given to organise it.

I believe it was a Tory that stated that it's unfair to permit supermarkets to remain open and sell non-essential goods, this is a reaction to that objection.

Shouldn't be too difficult to organise essential help, most of the infrastructure's in place, just needs expanding using locals, procure the items over the internet or a local shop that volunteers to have a bod there if the need arises.

I had mates who lived in Salford, the big Sainsbury’s by them used to do a gay singles shopping night every Thursday (not a wum)

I always browse in a supermarket

Not like I wake up and decide I’m going to sainsburys for a browse like. But if I’m in one to get some bits I’ll always browse about the ales and meats to see if there’s some decent deals.

I think its a woman thing

Seems there is people all over Facebook now sharing posts suggesting that all supermarkets including Asda will be stopping sales of nonessential products from Monday. One even says it was the cashier in Walton Asda who told her that.

Apart from the obvious bullocks fake news about it.

Our Asda today didn't have a single mention , do they think supermarkets will just spring this news onto them come Monday morning?

Worrying how many believe it as well.
