So there needs to be some other solution until a vaccine comes along because as it stands, worldwide in general, lockdown is the only way they know how to combat it

Unfortunately given it's winter in Europe it'd be extremely dangerous to try and open things back up fully again, I know.

Or we just manage the "ending" of a lockdown much, much better.

A full lockdown again won't "work" but not because of the actual lockdown part, just the coming out of it.
It depends on what your priorities are. If it's to save lives, it does work.

The coming out of it then has to be managed in a competent way...which is where political leadership comes into it. A complete surrendering of the agenda to the expert's in public health has to be made and any other consideration is secondary to that. The economy included.

They completely failed to prepare for a pandemic, which was part of their role. The response has been slow, and they seem unable to influence decision making. As a leadership against a crisis they are just as at blame as Johnson, Hancock and the rest.

No it wasn’t. The job of preparing for emergencies is that of the government; that’s the fundamental reason for its existence. They’ve been in charge of things for ten years now, have cut almost everything (including public health) and now here we are.

Surely one of the big issues here is how you get more people to actually engage with a tracking system. Financial support is part of it but it doesn't solve everything. Surely the level of engagement is as big an issue as the actual system. They need to fix both issues.

Well I just said the actual lockdown part does work. For obvious reasons of course.

I can easily envisage a scenario worse than last spring in terms of fatalities and then a dramatic reordering of the scene, politically-speaking, on the strength of that.

Johnson cant survive more carnage. He's just bet all his political capital on these new 'restrictions' working and they wont.

The whole thing is just depressing.

It feels like we’ve gone back to square one all over again, with no end in sight.

You and others were told during the time the economy was opened up again that it had to be much later in the year to open up (the UK opened up again at the same time as other nations who were ahead of us on the curve), and whene re-opening government had to make sure it was measured and not the free for all it was encouraged to turn into...beach parties, foreign holidays, ale houses and restaurants serving indoors, all other retail and hospitality thrown wide open. And we underlined that any reopening had to be in conjunction with a credible and wide ranging track and trace system that shut down anywhere (and anyone) where infection reared its head.

We're all depressed with this, but you and others took a laissez faire approach to matters in the summer and you should acknowledge that much.

Shame you didn’t take it as seriously as other did at the start mate.

Still think it’s all a hoax?

We’ve all got things wrong. None of us are experts, least not yourself.

Stop bouncing round the thread giving it the big one yeah.

It's all on keeping Christmas and happy thoughts about Brexit.

It's in their job description:
Advising on the policy implications of research and emerging evidence, relating to health protection, immunisation and emergency preparedness and response on both a proactive and reactive basis;

It was their job and they screwed the pooch.

No Dave, your obsession and hatred for anyone who makes a living in the hospitality industry is just downright weird and frankly quite sinister.

The country opened up again, the cases didn’t rise as you predicted and wanted. You went silent for weeks as a result, occasionally popping up to squawk like a demented parrot over photos of people on beaches.

The government fudged the track and trace system schools and universities went back and lo and behold here we are.

Don't quite get the criticism of Whitty and Sage. They said we needed to come out of lockdown more slowly or we'd be back where we started in the summer. They recognised long full lockdowns cause significant social, economic and health problems beyond covid-19 so recommended the circuit breakers. They also warned the public and businesses to follow the rules or we'd be back here (be honest, we've all seen folk and workplaces/businesses cutting corners). Of course, the latter point is facilitated by the inconsistent overt and implicit messages and strategies employed by our elected overlords.
