Guessing is as much a part of the scientific process as proving.

No that is called theorising , which then has to be proven.
I'm sure you've said you manage people in the past, do you do performance monitoring with them?
No we don't do performance monitoring. We can but we don't.

We have appraisals but that is focused on user feedback to us rather than is telling them.

Just because we can't apply that one standard to everyone.

How do you decide on someone's yearly performance? Just take their word they've done a brilliant job?

When the virus situation is brought under control the service jobs will come back, there may even be an opportunity for some of the brightest to fill holes in the market now some of the established brands have folded too.

It's far from ideal but it's temporary. I'm more worried about a no deal Brexit and the manufacturing jobs that could be lost.

They won't all come back. Brexit is largely irrelevant right now given the effect the virus is having. You cannot compare the two.

We need timescales and clear strategies. Just saying we wait till the virus has gone is no use anymore. It will be far too late for millions of people with that approach.

No.

As the roles my staff have are multifunctional there is no standard to work to. We make sure all aspects of service are covered and if they aren't then we intervene.

Anyone brilliant at their job move on in time.

It's not a machine I run. Noone gets pulled up for doing less than someone else as long as they are doing their job. The appraisals are a tick box exercise anyway sadly.

This isn't my doing, it's the NHS model.

That is your opinion and who am I to tell you what to think. Imho you can compare as they both do damage to the economy though.

You are right not all jobs will come back, but there will be potential for new pubs/bars/cafés when it is over. How damaging just depends how long this drags on for next year and the aforementioned Brexit on the cost of goods and consumer confidence.

I don't know what you mean by 'the NHS model'. There isn't a consistent NHS model for appraisal or performance review.

Does anyone ever tell you that you can't properly assess them unless you've observed them every hour of the day?

  • Working test and trace - go back to the drawing board. Give full data access to public health, ability to enforce and accompanying legislation to support it.
  • Stricter enforcement of distance, hand washing and masks.
  • Local authorities and expertise given the opportunity to make localised decisions
  • Greater budget allocation to prevention rather than cure - national assurance should happen
  • Increased funding to primary care to manage community support.
  • Stick to a strategy to enforce public health messaging rather than politicised rhetoric.
As @davek says, money is there, it's just not being didn't spent effectively and unfortunately due to a botched initial response, the Government have played catch-up and when they have bought time, they've squandered it.

Oh and the current working timeframe for vaccine is March-April.
Certainly local area HEALTH authorities making decisions. The Germans hand powers of that nature over to the federal states and it's proven to be a success over a national system. What I wouldn't do though is agree to local municipal authorities to have the ultimate say-so on what happens in our regions - like our City Region. We can see over the weekend how much they want to fight the case for businesses while paying lip service only to public health. That's all they're about, because they are desperate for the business rate they pull in from those businesses.

But we don't assess them?

I'm not sure where you are going with this. What you suggest sounds like the data management system which we do have access to , to see how much work people do each day on a system basis. However we don't use that as previously mentioned to 'assess' anyone.

We don't assess them, we support them in their development.

I've only been here a couple of years but not at any point have we pulled anyone in for not working hard enough or doing enough work.

Absolutely spineless the lot of them:

We made it clear we do not feel that the Furlough scheme announced recently is adequate and that businesses in the Region especially those in the hospitality sector and those serving it will be damaged and many will suffer long term damage or close for good. Government made it very, very clear they would not shift and improve the scheme.

I’m sure they really really really pushed the government hard in these negotiations.

City centre is gonna be knackered once this is over.

Wouldn't like to see us shut anywhere but for me the uni's international students aside should have reduced yearly fees and told students to stay/work from home with support to fund them a laptop etc.

With S.A.D due to kick in over the dark winter months I imagine suicide rates will also jump up with all this going on.

Asked about the closure of gyms, he said: "It would appear to me that some of these things - we asked for the evidence of course - some of these things are a judgment call.

"Our directors of public health have looked at this and they didn't push back greatly against the list (of places to close) and all we need to do now is if the Government can provide us with that scientific evidence that says that there are some outbreaks in gyms and other things that are on the list then we have to accept that.

So I and many of my colleagues wake up today to find we’re again out of work on the basis of a “judgement call”. Of course everyone here who still gets paid WFH I’m sure will be along to tell me how in a pandemic sacrifices have to be made.

I'm starting to feel it already tbh, working from home feels a lot different when you look out the window at grey and going for a walk after work it's basically dark now.

Yes, that's fair enough. Get proper compo for workers. But we cant have our civic leaders placing businesses above community health.

Hospitality contributes to the transmission of this virus and they cant be seen to be holding the door open for them.

Hindering people from exercising during a health crisis makes enormous sense....

The people making these decisions are so detached from reality. They have no grasp of the effect they are having on people's wellbeing.

Think you're absolutely right. There needs to be regional and national assurance outside of local control.
