Which long-term just isn't the solution.

So how the hell do we get out of this without - and I hate to use this term - 'taking it on the chin' at one point or another.

I'm not expecting you to answer that and surely there has to be another solution, but atm it doesn't seem like any organisation or government has a clue.

We put policy and guidelines in place as best we can according to all the scientific evidence available at the time, let society function as best it can given the framework, evaluate the impact, and adjust accordingly. Rinse and repeat.

That is how social science is supposed to work. Science doesn't have all the answers immediately, but science and human ingenuity are wonder for finding solutions given even the most extraodinary circumstances.

But you will always have tribal idiots who will criticize anything the government does, any tweak in policy or change of strategy as an excuse to stick the knife in and claim that we are run by incompetent and uncaring baffoons. The older you get the more you realise that some people do nothing at all but find something or someone to blame for their woes, and a public health crisis is the perfect platform for them to voice their vitriol. They have nothing at all constructive to offer, and frankly I have no time for them.

Covid is spreading like wildfire through universities already.

What’s worse, missing Christmas at home for a year or killing your elderly relatives who come to visit ?

We have to have a sensible debate here without going straight to the killing grandparents stuff. Of course there are risks, but there are big risks with every option and we have to find a balance. A winter of no social interaction with family for isolated people, be they elderly, young, or somewhere in between, is going to create another crisis.

Setting rules that will obviously be ignored is not the best way forward as far as I see. We need to educate on how to mitigate risks rather than dictating, because people will ignore. The basics are being completely forgotten because of the government changing the rules every other day.

Are you talking about anyone on here specifically lol

I have defended the UK government through certain aspects of this but their handling since lockdown lifted has been a joke.

Like Starmer said yesterday, the changes now are necessary, but were not inevitable.

My issue is these restrictions can't just be rinsed and repeated, as they're doing a lot of damage to a lot of people.

Music venues may never recover. They were already struggling as it is. Small sports clubs or sports centres. Your local boozer or independent hotel or whatever.

Unfortunately. 'What a mess' would be my take.

It was a genuine question.

I don’t buy the mental health argument as justification, it’s one Christmas. The general health risks are far more important.

Starmer wont step up and back tighter restrictions, as the health experts are advising. Hed's like a lap dog for the Tories, desperate not to appear like the LP under him aren't 'wreckers'.

An utter walloper of a man. "New Leadership"...yeah, that's one way of putting cowardice.

I dunno about you, but I don't see too many rock concerts and sports events packing out stadiums across the world right now.

Businesses will adjust. They HAVE to adjust. Some will fail, that is the the unfortunate and inevitable truth.

But like I said, humans are resourceful, ingeneous and adaptable. This is what pessimists always forget. Over time new businesses will be created that are better suited to succeed given the new shape of the world. The optimist in me says that maybe this is the kick up the a$s that our country needs to catch up exciting new growth industries like tech and biotech that we have been left behind on, and one reason why Britain has increasingly fallen behind other countries over the last decade. Less bartenders, more web developers, or whatever...

I was in my local the other night and they`ve implemented the change of rules early - to get people used to it.

Here`s a " new " evening in the pub.

Enter wearing a mask.
Hand sanitise.
Provide details for track and trace.
Find a table.
Take your mask off.
Wait for table service.
Have a drink.
Put your mask back on to go to the toilet.
Toilet, hand sanitise, back to your table.
Order another drink.
Rinse and repeat.
Put your mask back on and go home at 10 pm.

The net effect will be that people will just stop going out, as it`s too much hassle and not really very relaxing.
It's so exhausting. Was at starbucks, okay we have a mask on while ordering, but then I proceed to a table and started reading my book, five min later, I was about to go to toilet, they warned me to wear a mask again, even briefly. It kills every bit of fun. I don't feel relaxed, I feel stressed.
