UK government’s reusable gown project fails to produce any PPE

Trade bodies say they believe a domestic supply chain for reusable gowns will not be established

A UK government initiative to make reusable gowns for health workers in Britain and reduce reliance on a fiercely competitive global market dominated by China has not produced a single approved garment after almost six months.

Trade bodies involved in the state-sponsored project say they no longer believe a domestic supply chain for reusable gowns will be established, although the Department of Health and Social Care says the scheme is on track. The government initiative aims to prepare a stockpile of reusable gowns ahead of a possible rise in Covid-19 cases this winter.

However, the bodies involved in the talks with the government, which began in March, said the lack of progress meant that many NHS trusts had instead bought personal protective equipment overseas. The DHSC said an unnamed NHS trust in London was trialling a UK-made gown and orders would be placed once tests were completed — although it declined to say when this would be. The department added that it would reveal who made the gowns “in due course”.

However, Adam Mansell, chief executive of the UK Fashion and Textile Association, which represents most textile manufacturers, said the government had ignored businesses with a record of gown production. Mr Mansell said he sent the government a comprehensive plan for making reusable gowns in Britain in mid-July, but it had “done nothing with it at all”. “They don’t understand the industry,” he added.

He believes the high price of the gowns, which cost about £15 each but can be washed up to 70 times, is the reason why the project has slowed. “Their interest has stopped,” he said of the government. He added that making reusable gowns in the UK could help provide the country with “resilience” and avoid dependence on middlemen to buy PPE — which was sometimes faulty — from overseas. “This was going to be an opportunity to build back better,” he said.

Hospital figures - 4 deaths were announced today, one up on yesterday and the exact same total as last Monday. All 4 were in English hospitals, again one up on yesterday and the exact same total as last week with all occurring in the past 10 days. The 7 day rolling average remains unmoved at 9.29

All settings - for the 28 day cut off, 3 deaths were announced today, one up on both yesterday and last Monday. The 7 day rolling average rises slightly to 7.57

For the 60 day cut off, 4 deaths were announced today, 2 up on yesterday and 3 up on last Monday. The 7 day rolling average rises slightly to 11.71

For the Legacy/No cut off, 8 deaths were announced today, one down on yesterday and 5 up on last Monday. The 7 day rolling average rises to 51.43

Feel like this is rather ironic given the current testing shortage.

I’ve just had a letter through the post from the ONS offering every member of our household £425 in vouchers for having a Covid test every month for a year.

They come to your house at your convenience.

Meanwhile people are driving three hours for a test ? o_O

How come? Reader's Digest?

They seem to be sending them randomly to a certain number of households. Government have commissioned a study with Oxford Uni to understand the virus.

It’s probably a good thing to be honest that they are at least doing some forward planning. Just a shame they’ve got no tests for people with actual symptomslol

1. Its really annoying

2. No one anywhere actually has a clue

3. Some blokes with beards and no social life will save us all one day soon. (I hope)

Can I have the £450m grant please?

Seriously though, it'll be a different tier imo. Maybe it'll be the likes of Capita letting Johnson spaff wads at them via an amateur contract where they've exaggerated capacity and they're falling down because they're absolutely feckless. Director gets a seat in the HOL for keeping secret squirrel.

Capita are called Link now.

They are still utterly tragic mind.

It's for an extension of the existing ONS surveillance work.

It's a tough call, but if push came to shove, I'd prioritise the ONS work over general testing, and limit general testing to those who either had symptoms, or were vulnerable, or worked with people who are vulnerable, or were in an area with above average cases.

Obviously the best answer is to increase the number of tests available, but, at the moment, the ONS survey only tests about 25k people, and to get more accurate data, both in terms of overall cases and geographical spread, that needs to be closer to 100k.
