Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

To be fair, the theory probably does have some legs. His way of putting it isn't subtle, but it's hard to fault the underlying logic, and local politicians are working especially hard in Asian communities in places like Bolton, Pendle and Blackburn to get the message across about COVID.

Again, to me it’s just a dangerous assumption. Think those things yourself but keep them in your head.

This community also tend to have generational family living under the same household, rather then banging them off into Nursing homes...

Which of course preliminary studies have found to be a significant factor in COVID19 affecting them so much.

For me, if I had to guess and my life depended on it, I'd say this spike has been in those communities. I don't necessarily blame them for it though as I think it's the result of the way they live, and they act as a bellwether for the virus resurging generally.

And I think armini is probably right that Eid is a big factor, but he's been overly blunt about it.

But we'll never be told. The overarching point is that the virus isn't going away and a second major wave is completely inevitable.

Very much the same that was found in south east, it will be people from certain ethnic communities in certain work being put at most risk...

And have more sympathy for those wanting to celebrate Eid than those brethren of mine sunning themselves on beaches in full lock down couple of months backs, defecating all over the place...

Whilst some might find it fair to assume it’s the asian communities in these places that are the cause you could equally make a blind assumption the issue might be that all the Brexit Tommy Robinson loving conspiracy theorists live up north? An equally wild assumption with no evidence...

If you speak to local politicians and those in public health, then it's not really rocket science. There's an issue with transmission in deprived parts of all the regions mentioned. The vast majority of those areas have predominately Asian populations.

That doesn't mean it's their fault, and the obvious danger is that the rest of the region will wrongly assign blame, but it'd be burying your head in the sand to ignore the issue, so it needs good local intervention and communication to turn things round.

So why not places in the midlands or down south that equally have huge asian populations?

There's quite a bit of circumstantial evidence to support one over the other though mate.

I know a fair few of those 30 have large Asian populations - I don't recognise any that immediately scream at me that they don't.

The issue for me isn't speculation; it's when it spills over into blame. For me, it could easily be a spike in those populations but for pretty much unavoidable cultural reasons alone. In that instance it'd be like blaming black peope for sickle cell anemia - wouldn't make sense.

There's no evidence really that Asian communities have ignored the rules. So blame shouldn't be apportioned. However, if it is those communities, it's very important that lockdown measures are in place to stop the spread at root, without fear of racism.

It’s the bold part for me. If the stats were there for me that said the % of cases in these areas was from a certain minority (it might be out there) then fair enough but no one has posted it so it’s all just an assumption.

Where I live will probably end up on a lockdown soon as well we feel up here and it is massively Caucasian dominated.

That's the problem - the government would never release those figures, because it'd be a racists' paradise. So without clarity people only have circumstantial evidence and can therefore only speculate.

And when you 30 problem areas and apparently pretty much all of them are Asian communities, people are going to put one and one together and, honestly, on this occasion they're probably coming up with the correct answer.

Does it do any good? No, not really. As long as the authorities have the info and act on it without fear of being labelled racist then that's fine - we don't need to know.
