SSP is pretty pathetic really. But if it is going to be linked to individual salaries, which I think you are alluding to, it needs to be paid for, probably out of increased NIC. Will people be prepared to pay it?

Personally, I'd link Statutory Sick Pay to the Minimum Wage, at least for short term sick leave. Wouldn't be cheap, but it would go some way towards limiting the number of people who, for economic reasons, have to drag themselves into work.

As peoples salary increases, they're more likely to be working for companies which have more generous occupational sick pay schemes, so, in general, they're less of an issue.

I`ll be wearing a bright yellow haz chem suit, a respirator and carrying a flag with MURDERER in bold letters, so hopefully that should get the message across.

I`ll also be carrying a dozen Greggs pasties and half a dozen cans of Stella in my backpack just in case I have to self isolate on the Fells.

Don't worry too much about the R rate in Ireland. Not just yet anyway. The incident rate is so low over there that even a tiny outbreak could push the R over 1.
