And if that 750 included your dad and your gran?
Those 750 belong to someone!

Deaths are always tragic to those closest, but life is never without risk, and most decisions are a trade off in some way or other. 1,800 people died on the roads last year, all of which were no doubt tragedies to those involved, but no one would advocate banning cars from the roads. Instead we try and introduce measures to keep business as usual whilst reducing the risk of those numbers being added to. I suspect that's ultimately all we can do until vaccines are available en masse.

Nearly 2 weeks ago, there is a direct correlation.
I'm not saying there isn't a correlation mate. I'm just saying don't get too worked up about the R rate when you're starting from such low base. If it continues at more than 1 for a couple of weeks then fair enough.

I see that the actual number of new infections reported today is 27, with 23 of them being under 25. Given pubs reopened on 29th June, that is likely a reaction to that event. But a decent track and trace system should be able to manage that situation so it doesn't get out of control.

I agree it would help if the younger generation obeyed social distancing rules. We have the same problem here in the UK. I'd be more concerned if they were refusing to comply with T&T if I'm honest.

As a matter of interest what were the daily new infection rates a week ago? I'm trying to get some idea as to what sort of spike in new infections we can expect here in the UK after restaurants reopened last weekend.

Question question mounting up for the Government as they ignore legal requirement to publish Government tenderings within 20 days. The awarding of contracts to pest control companies and sweet shops, to well not supply adequate PPE to the NHS and Social care..

I think it was more that he called 750 deaths "sod all". It was a bit of a dismissive in fairness. I just think some people need to be a bit more careful with the language they use. The same point could have been made in a much less offensive way. It's just a courtesy really. Some posters on here will no doubt have lost somebody close to them.

It's been steady around 20 a day for a while, most are either centred around meat processing or from foreign travel. R rate has been at about 0.5 for about 5 or 6 weeks.

Our track and trace has been very poor although they've launched an app this week that initially has been taken up by about 1/3 of the population which is good. However our track and trace has not been up to scratch and it's only through societal compliance with social distancing and the fact we're an island that we've had good success in getting it under control.

We still had one of the highest death rates per population in the world.

Social distancing is one completely out the window and with lobby groups (and even state agencies such as bord failte) calling for greater relaxation coupled with a slew of new ministers in government funding their feet we are weeks away from a surge.

Regular washing and social distancing are still the main keys to this.

When you say social distancing has gone out of the window, I hope that applies to just the minority that for some reason get all the media coverage. If it's like the UK, the vast majority if people are still obeying the rules, and if that continues to happen we should be able to prevent a second surge. Fingers crossed anyway, and I hope your own fears are misplaced too.

This is kinda why banging on about the 'Chinese virus' is wrong.

I've spoken about this before:

There's been a noticeable presence of anti-China posters on the forum for at least 12 months, and while they dont advocate attacks on Chinese people in general, they do stir up a lot of tension with the issue of China's role in the world. It's inevitable that online anger translates in the real world to thuggish attacks on ordinary Chinese (though Im not casting aspersions on that score to anyone posting here).

The 2.5 Million mosty very elderly and poorly people in this country are disproprtionately affected by Covid19's presence. It's bogus to compare that risk to them with the general risk of other forms of medical or accidental death.
