To a startling degree, many coronavirus patients are reporting similar experiences. Called hospital delirium, the phenomenon has previously been seen mostly in a subset of older patients, some of whom already had dementia, and in recent years, hospitals adopted measures to reduce it.

“All of that has been erased by Covid,” said Dr. E. Wesley Ely, co-director of the Critical Illness, Brain Dysfunction and Survivorship Center at Vanderbilt University and the Nashville Veteran’s Administration Hospital, whose team developed guidelines for hospitals to minimize delirium.

Now, the condition is bedeviling coronavirus patients of all ages with no previous cognitive impairment. Reports from hospitals and researchers suggest that about two-thirds to three-quarters of coronavirus patients in I.C.U.’s have experienced it in various ways. Some have “hyperactive delirium,” paranoid hallucinations and agitation; some have “hypoactive delirium,” internalized visions and confusion that cause patients to become withdrawn and incommunicative; and some have both.

Sounds like a @Paris Wet dream

I think we need to consider the broad impact this year will have had on people’s mental health.

Everyone is in some kind of collective fight or flight mode at the moment. Which is understandable but I’m not sure how you tackle mass stress like this.

But I think that idea explains a lot of what we are seeing right now.

Everyone needs contact and touch and community and we’ve been in an extended people of that being stifled in a huge way. And for some people that is going to exacerbate existing mental health issues.

Unfortunately, nearly all of our world leaders are their through a divide and conquer form of politics. It’s all they know. We need unity and to do whatever we can to find some.

Our leaders (I mean that in a broad sense including business leaders in areas like media) just don’t have those skills (or the desire) in their arsenal.

Basically all need to find the ability to be kinder to one another.

Peace and love etc.

Seems a sub-optimal way to fix the core issue

That picture prompted me to wonder how patients are being dealt with in the US? Here in the UK of course, you don’t get asked for your credit card details when you’re taken to hospital, or receive a bill when you’re sent home. Is Coronavirus treatment an exception and given free or what?

Good post mate.

The number of older people especially, those shielding for 4 months now and with no great prospect to get out safely for the foreseeable, who are going through tremendous hardship, physically and mentally is shocking. They are my concern, tbh.

We hear of all kinds of reports on people of working age and school age, but imagine being in your 70s and 80s and reduced to maybe a conversation every few days (or weeks) with a neighbour? Yes, there's social media for those who can navigate it, but it's not the same. This is the ongoing and underlying silent and unseen tragedy of Covid19.

Never mind opening incubation units like pubs and restaurants; this government need to be addressing urgently the social disaster in that demographic that's unfolding as we speak.
