The willingness to do that has been gradually eroded for a while tbh, with Trump's election and the Brexit vote two particular blows to multilaterialism. It's not a good trend.

It’s grim. You’d like to think that societies evolve and develop into greater levels of understanding and cooperation. Instead we’ve regressed massively into the well worn tropes of nationalism and faux patriotism. I’m largely great believer in the fundamental decency of humanity but this is getting tested more and more of late.
