Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

You`re spot on about the media.

I had a conversation with my best mate last night, who has no underlying health conditions, doesn`t sit in an at risk group and was already in the fortunate position of being able to work from home in a very well paid full time job before all this kicked off.

He hasn`t left the house at all since the lockdown, neither has his 5 yr old son or his wife, as he thinks the zombie apocalypse is outside his front door. ( they get their shopping delivered _

The purpose of the conversation was to find out whether he intended to come on a pre booked weekend away in August or if I should put another mate on standby.

At first I couldn`t get a straight answer out of him, but I eventually dragged it out of him, that he`s that scared of what he`s read / reading, that him and his family have
made the conscious decision not to leave the house again until a vaccine is found and that they`re making plans to home school their son until then !!!!!

At that point I had to leave the conversation as I didn`t want to say something that I`d regret and lose a good friend.

I know this is extreme, but how you`ve got to ask yourself how the hell have we ended up here ??
As I was reading that mate my first thought was that your mate needs to be told that he's a selfish get and that he's stopping somebody with a genuine need getting a home delivery service. But clearly he has some worrying concerns and as his best mate I think it falls to you to try and help him come through this.

You need to try and find out what is driving this anxiety and help him overcome it, for no other reason that you can't guarantee that a vaccine will ever be found for this thing. You may already know the answer if you're very close, i.e. over protective of the child, an over anxious wife, pre existing mental health conditions such as depression.

I'm sure there are many people around who are in a similar position, frightened to leave their own home and they are just another example of the fallout from this thing. The mental health effect of this virus is something that will go on long after the virus itself ends. As will the economic aspect, the two being inextricably linked ultimately.

How we got to this position in the first place is a combination of things including poor leadership, poor communication, a mixed bag of advice from our experts, a divisive press and community, and more than our fair share of bellends who all know better than to follow the rules.

Hoping for some more encouraging data from other trials
Question What is the effect of convalescent plasma therapy added to standard treatment, compared with standard treatment alone, on clinical outcomes in patients with severe or life-threatening coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)?

Finding In this randomized clinical trial that included 103 patients and was terminated early, the hazard ratio for time to clinical improvement within 28 days in the convalescent plasma group vs the standard treatment group was 1.40 and was not statistically significant.

Meaning Among patients with severe or life-threatening COVID-19, convalescent plasma therapy added to standard treatment did not significantly improve the time to clinical improvement within 28 days, although the trial was terminated early and may have been underpowered to detect a clinically important difference.

Judging by the traffic, both motorised and pedestrian, on County Road, Walton Lane and in Stanley Park we are now back to normality In Liverpool. Only the queueing for shops would dictate otherwise. Tbf, even though i’ve reached the dodgy age of 60, can’t say I disagree; little chance of catching it outside and look after yourself in enclosed spaces.

raises the drawbridge and hunkers down

I’d question if they had any intention of locking down in the first place...
Having just read your previous post , which I think summed things up pretty well, I'm surprised by this post.

I think they were guilty of, the same as the rest of Western Society, hoping the virus wouldn't take root on our shores. But they always knew that if it did get here then lockdown would be inevitable at some stage.

Just as one example, my partner works in dermatology, a lot of which is diagnosis/treating skin cancers. They have 600 people on the waiting list for one hospital and have only been able to get 80 of the most high risk patients in due to Covid restrictions. This is despite the fact that there are zero Covid patients in the hospital in question.

They’ve had patients calling up who have no other risk factor for Covid saying they aren’t coming in because they’re shielding, despite the fact they could have a melanoma.

Extrapolate that out across the country just for skin cancer, never mind all of the other cancers.
Both my sister and her husband have skin cancers. Hers has been properly diagnosed prior to the shutdown. It's considered none essential and she has been told it will be removed sometime his year. Her husbands has, thus far, only been treated by photograph and phone consultation. On initial inspection it was believed to be non-invasive and has been treated by a prescription ointment, to be followed up by a proper physical examination once they have the capacity. They live in the Lakes and I think their local hospital is at Barrow.

I was being a little flippant with that second comment... BUT I do think we locked too late. Whether we were waiting for the right time as guided by science or whether we forced into it is up for debate. Them not wanting to lockdown is natural- NO government wants to lockdown after all. By no means do I think the government simply planned to let people die though.

My main criticism of them, as I think most reasonable people’s has been, is in this transition from the initial messages to the “stay alert” message which preceded the easing of the lockdown. Naturally some lockdown fatigue will be coming in to play now but the transition from clear, concise messaging and instructions to the stuff they peddle now has been really really unhelpful. The lockdown compliance at the start was there for everyone to see. Now, mixed messages, rules open to interpretation, too many caveats etc... Throw in the Cummings saga and I’m not surprised lockdown compliance is waning. Opening up was always going to be a balancing act, hence why I think this obsession over the R rate is mostly unhelpful to the average member of the public.

They don’t need to go as far as some people in this thread who seem to really enjoy demonising and belittling the general population, but in this situation a return to clear messaging which everyone can follow will do us all some good.
