UK coronavirus cases have more than halved in last week - ONS figures

The number of people with coronavirus has more than halved in the last week, according to the latest official figures.

Data released by the Office of National Statistics (ONS) showed 53,000 people in England had the virus at any one time during the last two weeks of May.

That's down from 133,000 in the last round of figures.

The ONS says there is now a consistent downward trend - from more than 0.4% of the population being infected at the end of April down to 0.1% at the end of May.

The data also shows an estimated 39,000 people a week are currently catching COVID-19, down from 54,000 last week.

It hasn't updated its estimate of the number of people who have had the virus over the course of the outbreak, which remains at 6.8%.

The analysis also found that 28% of excess deaths registered between 7 March and 1 May in England and Wales did not involve coronavirus, totalling 12,900 deaths out of 46,380.

Excess deaths is the number of deaths above the average total for this period in the last five years.

Many of the non-coronavirus excess deaths have occurred in older age groups, particularly those with underlying health conditions.

Around two-thirds of non-coronavirus excess deaths in this period were linked to dementia, Alzheimer's disease and "symptoms, signs and ill-defined conditions" mainly indicating old age, the analysis found.

But the ONS said undiagnosed COVID-19 is a "likely explanation" for some of the excess deaths of elderly people with underlying health conditions not linked to coronavirus.

The total number of deaths linked to COVID-19 recorded by the government currently stands at 39,904 - far lower than the 46,380 excess deaths counted by the ONS.

Many countries across the world have begun to ease their lockdowns, including the UK.

But a World Health Organisation spokeswoman said today there have been "upticks" in coronavirus cases in some countries as social distancing measures were loosened.

The UK has said it will be mandatory for commuters to wear face masks on public transport from 15 June, but the British Medical Association says this should be extended to all areas where social distancing is not possible.

Liar, liars pants on fire.

The government has been accused of lying to cover the sham of its twice-delayed investigation into why the coronavirus kills a far higher percentage of BAME – black, Asian and minority ethnic – sufferers than white.

The Tories had claimed that the government’s review of the death rate was being led by black surgeon Professor Kevin Fenton, with minister Kemi Badenoch repeating the claim in a Commons statement:

But this has been exposed as completely false. Public Health England (PHE) has admitted that Prof Fenton only ‘contributed’ to the report, leading Labour MP Dawn Butler to ask publicly whether Badenoch lied – and to announce that she had asked PHE for more information on the professor’s involvement:

What's new with Tories 'lying to the house'.

A total of 2,409 patients have died in Scotland after testing positive for coronavirus, up by 14 from 2,395 on Thursday, Nicola Sturgeon said.

Speaking at the Scottish Government’s coronavirus briefing in Edinburgh, the First Minister said 15,582 people have tested positive for the virus across Scotland, up by 29 from 15,553 previous day.

There are 995 patients in hospital with confirmed or suspected Covid-19, a fall of 26 in 24 hours, marking the first time since March 30 this figure has been under 1,000.

Of these patients, 23 were in intensive care, down by five.

Who is paying you to say this

Government sussed by the unions, well done for all our safety if travelling on the trains.

Rail unions could strike over Shapps's face covering volunteers

“Rail unions have threatened to strike over government plans for an “army” of volunteers at transport hubs to remind travellers to wear a face covering.

The transport secretary, Grant Shapps, announced the policy of using volunteers without consultation according to the RMT union, which condemned moves to put unpaid workers in “safety critical roles”.

The RMT really are an odious order. If the Government offered all RMT members a 20% pay rise the RMT wouldn’t give a stuff about unpaid workers in their ridiculously termed ‘safety critical roles’.....it‘s volunteers advising people to wear masks, it doesn’t require them to be paid, nor dare I say members of the RMT, nor have a qualification to hand out masks or urge commuters to wear a mask......

In Asia they deploy robots for that kind of thing. I suspect the RMT would complain that they would jeopardize safety in the event of a nuclear explosion/insert other extremely unlikely event

Haha an 'odious order'. What like the Moonies, Orange Order, the Freemasons or the Royal United Services Institute, now they are odious.

Strange that you have included RUSI, I expect your Kremlin masters don’t approve of them.....

this is now two posters accusing people of working for ‘paymasters ‘ . Genuinely if there is a few quid to be earned by posting rubbish firstly can you put my name on the list maybe recommend me but secondly suddenly a lot of pieces start to fit, I feel like the scales have fallen from my eyes .

So , buy your pub for cash did you ?
