My employer has just extended home office and a 4 day week until the end of September! Its a lazy bludger's dream!
On a slightly different note, I think after this has all petered off a lot of organisations will still be far more flexible about working hours or working from home.

I know I've been allowed to work from home if possible (not a lot), which before hand would have been pretty much been a big no-no for a lot of reasons.

My wife is able to remotely access most of her services from home and has only really needed to go in to check the mail and complete files that are not electronic.

If they are allowing people to work from home on a 4 day week for 6 months they cant really turn around and tell you that your presence is required full time in the office afterwards, can they?

Unless somebody like me ruins it for everyone...

You'd say not, however I suspect it'll eventually boil down to the balance of necessity versus productivity when we do eventually return to a close form of normality.

My wife for example has probably had the same workload (different tasks) and succeeded, but members of her team have had a much reduced workload.

On the face of it, it's been successful for them but will they be able to maintain the same productivity and expectations from home when what is required increases?

I think that'll be the acid test and there's no definitive answers because it will be dependent on individuals, businesses and their circumstances.

Yet, I do think there'll be a lot more flexibility because the mentality of having to work from an office all the time with similar start times has been disproven.

This is what I'm thinking as well. I'm working from home since early March and likely to be continuing as such until at least September.

I would much prefer on balance to actually be in the office but so far, things have gone about as well as can be expected at home, and I think that also stands for the majority of my colleagues as well. You do miss the daily interaction and facial and non-verbal cues from people can be important but the situation is still perfectly manageable where there is goodwill and a can-do attitude.

I'm wary about returning whilst social distancing is in place as I have vulnerable family and also rely on the train for work in normal times.

I don't think working from home forever and a day can be facilitated or is even desirable but I don't see any practical difference between doing it for six months than doing it for a year.

There's plenty of companies doing the numbers on how much they are paying in rent, heating, water, car parking arrangements, travel expenses etc. and thinking, hmm... I dunno about renewing that massive lease y'know...

Cummings, Johnson, the Durham police and others planned and plotted yesterday to 'Oh! What A Tangled Web We Weave When First We Practice To Deceive'. to save Cummings/Johnson's bacon Unfortunately for them, there's more holes in the Cummings/Johnson narrative than a Swiss cheese and smell a rat.

The election strategy genius that Johnson owes his 80 seat majority, says lots about the electorate...

Really good thread this. Hard now to see any other option for the Government but to dampen the noise by Introducing an opening of the economy - which is very risky.

This was at the top of that thread.

SICK PAY AND CARE HOMES Spent the last two days talking to carers about one specific issue. I've heard it a lot in the last 2 months and it's still a problem. It's sick pay- or a lack of it. I've spoken to carers who say they're afraid to have tests because of it".

The company I work for includes in its sickness policy that if you are off sick - including for sickness and diarrhoea - which is a precautionary must for care workers- or have been in hospital for any reason including an operation that person will get 'a significant discussion' i.e a black mark against your name. The treatment of most care workers is finally being highlighted and it's not good reading. Will care workers get a better pay and conditions due to this pandemic - let's wait and see.
