If it was genuine he would've apologised straight away. He wouldn't have lied, mislead and changed his story until he had no other avenues left.

I'm not really sure what the point of an apology at this point would be either. The damage has been done.

My own guess is that once Durham police announced an investigation on Cummings' movements while he was supposed to be self-isolating the plan changed to him doing a mea culpa, saying sorry with a trembling lip/tear in his eye and asking the jury to take other offences into consideration. He'll be practicing how to look honest and sincere all afternoon.

Because many of these people believe, rightly or wrongly, that a glib comment will free them from their responsibilities and the general public will soon forget.

I don’t necessarily agree totally with your post but I do think a potential police investigation means a lot of bluff and bluster can’t be deployed long term because the truth will out so it’s about trying to control the narrative .

Yeah it would appear so. He’s trying to wrestle back control of the story here. Totally disgraceful if he’s still here by the end of the day.
