I meant bring the holidays forward. Not to scrap them. Obviously anyone who keeps working needs paid

Not gonna happen at short notice anyway.

I agree with that. Bring them forward to the middle of June and all return 1st August.

Never gonna happen because of the Bank Holiday in August

what do you propose then? Like shut's down completely? for what 2 years?

We have to get real... we have a virus that won't disapear, we have to live with it. Keeping schools shut because a teacher may have a 0.5% chance of dying is not sustainable. People under 60 have more chance of drowning than dying from this.

Are swimming pools permanently closed?

Finally someone with some common sense and perspective.

Teachers in state school age groups, mortality per 100,000 who contracted Covid in brackets

40 to 44 - 16,471 (41)
45 to 49 - 15,420 (82)
50 to 44 - 11,477 (148)
55 to 59 - 6,877 (257)

Ignoring over 59 as you would hope they would be automatically shielded.

We could expect to see 53 teachers die from COVID if improperly protected. That protection is not possible in the current circumstances according to teaching unions.

Some people seem to think that's worth it to teach kids for a month.

Nobody has said that, nice straw man.

what you don't seem to have factored in is people are not practicisng social distancing

And you think social distancing is possible in a classroom ?

I'm simply questioning the necessity to send kids back to school in June for the sake of one month of education, rather than allowing the virus to spread to more people more gradually and giving schools the summer to work out best ways to teach safely.

All you seem to be offering is "Well its not like going to war is it".

i think it's pretty easy for students to be 2m away from teachers at all time.

How you considered that some parents may be desperate for kids to go back to school because of there work?

As I mentioned earlier, an email went round our local NHS trust saying that vaccinations for MMR etc. are hugely down among children at the moment, so there seems an increased risk of getting diseases that really can kill children.
In one of the scientific advice reports I read, it was a good few weeks ago now but really relevant to this point, is that the current diseases don't just stop because of Covid-19, they are simply interrupted, as with this virus. A big issue is potentially not the possibility of a further outbreak of Covid-19 among young people but more infectious things like Measles (which is much more contagious than Covid) having an outbreak because of the interruption to routine vaccination.

Which is the greater risk?

Being two metres away does not stop you inhaling the virus through the air when you are in a confined space with two dozen people.

I'm sure some parents are desperate. Doesn't justify risking other people's lives.

If you're so eager to get schools back up and running, volunteer to be an assistant ? I'm sure they would appreciate the offer.
