Must be comforting for construction and manufacturing workers taking their life in their own hands returning to work today (possibly on public transport) - to see two middle class professional types getting giddy on bbc breakfast at the prospect of 18 holes of golf again on Altrincham golf course this morning.

Not that many more people will be back at work today.

If a business which was never forced to close had actually closed the last 7 weeks, the chances are they wont be rushing back.

And considering furlough has been extended till end of October, then firms will definitely not be rushing staff back. That would end their entitlement to the government subsidy.

The subsidies are keeping lots afloat and they will use them as long as possible.

My firm is quote "currently digesting the governments furlough announcements from yesterday prior to any decision for a return to work date" - loosely translated working out how they can make this work for them.

It will depend on workload vs cost for most businesses. The system is flexible that you can bring back, or temporarily lay off only the staff you need.

If a business didn't have lots of work or orders on Monday, then it's very unlikely they have loads today and will be bringing back an entire workforce. It will be slow and gradual and hopefully workloads can get back close to what they were before.

4 huge carnival ships in Southampton docks tied up.
They are laying off staff in their offices here as well.
I'd give them a massive swerve right now with regard to booking anything.
Other opinions are available like.
Mines already booked. As.you say personally I'd swerve booking anything new at the moment but some will as there are some fantastic bargains about at the moment.

Accepting credit notes is a risk for sure but Carnival are huge. They also own the likes of P&O, Cunard , Costa, and HA amongst others. I can't see them folding but many will streamline their operations if demand isn't there after this. But I can see shipbuilding industry hit hard.

The officers will still be getting paid for now but I can see the vast majority of ordinary staff being laid off as you say.

I'd agree it's not really worth a spot on breakfast telly, but I'd imagine greenkeepers, their support staff and parts of the golf supply chain will be glad to see people playing again.

Some interesting food for thought in the Telegraph as Johnson and Conservatism have bankrupt the country, income tax rises, and public sector pay freezes. What's that line the Tory's fed about fixing the roof when it was sunny...

Movement comparison for London and Manchester up until yesterday.

It will of course be interesting to see today’s movement (available tomorrow) but it doesn’t seem that Boris’ announcement on Sunday caused a massive surge of people onto the streets and into their cars.

I think there is a lot of digesting the information and trying to establish what is acceptable and what isn't within a workplace. Considerations as to how to distance effectively and limit risk to staff. It'll be a slow increase over the coming weeks I expect.

I agree, but that’s not the narrative some in here were spinning. The figures suggest that despite people being allowed to travel infinite distances within England and to spend unlimited time in open areas, many people are being restrained in their actions. Nice to see.

I myself thought there would have been a bigger jump to be honest.

Weekends will be a better guide if people are starting to travel large distances. Especially the long weekend next weekend.

It's not even a problem as long as people don't all go to the same place. If people would use common sense and not all travel to the most obvious tourist attraction in the area, in the middle of the afternoon, then the problem would be far less of a problem.

But the idea that millions were gonna flock back to work today was beyond daft. The media got a nice story out of it but it was utter rubbish, and those figures prove it.

His announcement definitely killed a few hundred people through the tv screen though.
