It's not that kids get ill; it's that they are carriers.

One kid gets ill, has next to no symptoms, but then infects a class of 30, who also have no symptoms, who then go home and promptly kill nanny and granddad.

The only argument against closing schools is childminding for core professions like doctors and nurses. Apart from that, it makes total sense to close them. They are daily mass gatherings.
The ability to develop natural immunity starts to break down as well, so the can could in essence just be kicked further down the line. All it takes is for one kid to come back with the virus and the whole thing starts again. It seems a daft move done in the 'it's the right thing to do' mould. Let them carry on going to school. Put the at risk in underground bunkers.
 
Stronger UV light in the sun damages the virus but yeah not made much difference in Singapore either where it's hot most of the year.

The thinking here is that the NHS is already under pressure in winter so they are trying to reduce any burden on it by delaying the spread as much as possible.

My experiences of our wonderful NHS is it's busy all year round just peals to bursting point in the winter......
