Incidentally, in Czech, they seem to be testing people who show any symptoms, plus their family, which perhaps explains why around 5% of tests are coming back positive.

It also means their cases stat is slightly more accurate than here, as we only test those admitted to hospital, hence why the mortality rate seems OK in Czech.

The folly of comparing countries that don't measure like with like.

What I dont understand tho Bruce, is why we have had so many negative tests in this country?

As I said yesterday only anecdotal but I’m not even sure we’re testing everyone attending at hospital more likely every with serious symptoms or perhaps admitted . That may be wrong but certainly seems It may be the case . If that is the position , it’s Unlikely to give us any kind of serious picture of what’s happening .

Until the test for antibodies is available we'll be guessing really. My impression is that the testing at the moment is more to get nhs workers who might be needlessly self isolating back to work.

And i think that’s probably the most valuable use of what we’ve got , given where we are , does seem we were woefully underprepared for this .

doubtful. Viruses tend to mutate to a weaker strain.

More likely..is all the data we had was from China, which have shown to be utter bull.
Virus can and do mutate to become more resistant to immune responses and also treatment, please read WHO, CDC and BMC that will explain how they do this and not just the Novel Coronavirus.

It's funny, but yesterday I got a copy of an edition of the Economist that looks ahead to 2020 in a variety of areas. It's only a few months old yet has dated terribly. There's no mention of such a pandemic whatsoever. The whole world has been blindsided by this, and perhaps the only reason Asia has done any better is that they have more experience.

I accept that mate but I think those GOP senators sold their shares on the weeks leading up to the 13/14th of February following a briefing . So clearly there was information out there that a lot weren’t privy to , at the end of this I just want questions asked and answered .

Seems there is a story about facemasks going out of date years ago being sent to front line staff , with the expiry date being covered up.

I had to look it up to be sure but masks apparently don't go out of date, just the elastic it relates to.

The functionality still works fine apparantly.

I do wonder why 4 weeks in we haven't been able to mobilise ppe easily. It doesn't take 4 weeks to manufacture or even ship this equipment into the country. I mean I'm not factory owner but they could probably make thousands a day surely?

I know I went to a street party on new years eve, been their for about an hour and right out of the blue, just lost my voice.

Everyone in the party was made up:), next two weeks felt like crap, flue like symptoms, I always have the flu jab, ( I have diabetes type 2). But a lot of people were ill, same symptoms around that time, but it cleared up for me.
A few weeks later, someone came in work, lost his voice and gave me it back, but not as bad this time.

Just thought it was flue, thought nothing of it really until these rumours the last few weeks came out about it being here earlier than first thought and loads more infected than broadcast. Who knows really ?
I don’t know if they have/will do similar testing in the UK but the Netherlands tested sewage for coronavirus and it wasn’t present in February but was detected close to same time that cases were reported so unlikely to have been widespread there in January.

In the current COVID-19 pandemic, a significant proportion of cases shed SARS-Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) with their faeces. To determine if SARS-CoV-2 is present in sewage during the emergence of COVID-19 in the Netherlands, sewage samples of 7 cities and the airport were tested using RT-PCR against three fragments of the nucleocapsid protein gene (N1-3) and one fragment of the envelope protein gene (E).

No SARS-CoV-2 was detected in samples of February 6, three weeks before the first case was reported in the Netherlands on February 27.

On March 5, the N1 fragment was detected in sewage of five sites.

On March 15/16, the N1 fragment was detected in sewage of six sites, and the N3 and E fragment were detected at 5 and 4 sites respectively.

This is the first report of detection of SARS-CoV-2 in sewage. The detection of the virus in sewage, even when the COVID-19 incidence is low, indicates that sewage surveillance could be a sensitive tool to monitor the circulation of the virus in the population.
