Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

The “don’t wear masks“ recommendation seems largely to be because (at least in US) we are too short of them for healthcare workers.

Hopefully we get our act together on producing more so both medical staff and general public can wear them as agree that could be important part of managing the spread, especially given the number of asymptotic carriers.

We just started wearing masks for all patient encounters in my outpatient clinic. Supply of masks isn't any better, but now there are approved ways to clean/recycle masks so have been able to protect employees better.

That said - can't have facial hair, make up, perfume/cologne. That can't be cleaned.

Wasn’t that what Trump originally said himself though? Both the UK and US governments have dropped the ball big time in my opinion

Agree, what i can't forgive Boris for was, when this virus was in its very infancy in our country, Boris came across as if it was all a bit of a joke. The little smirk on his face and his little catchphrase, "remember to wash your hands and to sing happy birthday twice " . Now that could have been sound advice, but it came across as flippant an afterthought. From the very start it looked as if we were being led by the nose, by Wales, Scotland and Ireland, who took it far more serious and shut down things far quicker and thus have less cases and casualties than us.

This has been mentioned a few times - but it seems that up until today the government had a limit of max 15% of tests to go to NHS workers.

Clearly the fundamental issue is the number of tests they can administer in a day. It needs to be way, way higher.

The logistics of it need to be sorted as well - I'm not sure the idea of getting potential carriers to shoot around in Taxis all day is probably the wisest.

Clearly the fundamental issue is just who is in charge. Who are the two people signing this letter and why. Which one of them is actually responsible ......

Which technique are you using in your clinic?

Still can’t believe that mask/gown supply wasn’t ramped up earlier, rises to criminal incompetence imo.

He's right aswell, the path this government was going to take us down shouldn't be forgot, the amount of people they were happy to die to save the economy is disgusting

I hope the original strategy isn't lost by the end of this

I don't think they were 'willing to let people die' really. I mean, not on mass. Even though I agree with your point I think they just got the prep work wrong in Jan/Feb and didn't realise until too late (which is a huge worry).

They have been woefully unprepared in terms of testing and protecting the NHS in advance. If they had done those mitigating measures (tests, tests and more tests, plus stepped up production of ventilators, ensured hospital space, built additional fall back hospitals such as Nightingale, for example) then 'herd immunity' could have been a potential solution.

That wouldn't have meant we wouldn't be doing a lockdown. But had we had those measures in place we could have probably ensured herd immunity was a real option without the loss of life which we would have had if we'd stuck with the plan. Basically, the NHS would have been in a better position to cope before we had to take the measures of locking down the country.
