Contract Issue

Moyes- he dragged it out but we were lead to believe that he would sign. How could we have handled it differently? Given him an ultimatum that he would be sacked if he didn't renew his contract?

Baines- Martinez has said that he doesn't want contract negotiations going on during the season because it's a distraction. Maybe Baines himself is waiting to see what happens at United and whether we can secure CL football before committing his future?

Pienaar- I think there comes a critical point where the club can no longer hold out hope that the player will sign a new deal and their value suddenly starts to drop. We didn't want to lose Steven and we held on to him for as long as we could.

Heitinga- Apparently he almost left in the summer but Kenwright changed his mind. Perhaps it was because Alcaraz arrived injured and we weren't sure whether Distin's legs had gone or not? A Turkish club was reportedly after him and we had all those issues with Yobo where they don't want to pay and they drag it out until we virtually give the player away.

Generally speaking, if someone is on a 4 year deal, unless you start renegotiating half way through it, there is always the danger that they will run the contract down. And if we agreed to pay £50k per week initially but then need to increase it after a couple of years because of a new contract, our wage bill would quickly escalate.

That's because our board have made us so attractive as a club that they all want to renew their contracts with us ASAP.

You can add Barkely to that list of those disillusioned with the goings on at the club.

Yeah, the kid's become a key player for his boyhood club, one that's in the mix for the Champions League places and he's getting England callups because of it. No wonder the poor lad is disillusioned.

Barkley has two and a half years left on his contract.

Martinez has said contract discussions will take place after the xmas crazy period. Seemed clear Distin and Ross will be signing but not so clear if talks with Baines would happen.

I think they are also going to offer a contract to milkshock as a motivational speaker.

This is probably more of a sweeping statement but one thing i don't see many people asking these days is why are we letting players contracts run down every year? The whole thing seems bizarre considering we are a club that is skint.

1. David Moyes- There are conspiricay theories about why this happened by why didn't the club get their manager to sign a new contract? Hell Spurs tried that with Redknapp and replaced him when they knew he was playing silly beggers with them. For a club like us who used to rely on stability every year, he lost an awful lot of compensation for a manager that for all intents and purposes would have left us for United no matter what he had signed.

2. Leighton Baines- Our best player, last 18 months of his contract and no signs of a renewable any time soon. Considering his gae as well it seems like we are repeating past mistakes all over again. Get him to sign now and whatever he sells for will be his value, because come the summer, he will be worth less than he is now, and can we afford to lose money?

3. Steven Pienarr- Another bizarre situation, we wouldn't offer him the wage he wanted, sold him for less than his worth and then bought him back for more?! Why didn't we sell him on the summer if that was the case? Why didn't we meet his demands and save all the hassle of selling him in the first place?

4. Johnathan Heitinga- Answer me this, what other club with an out of favour INTERNATIONAL striker would be giving him away due to his contract being up soon? We signed Distin for what 5-6 million at an older age than he is, why are we practically giving him away to someone? Surely wage demands or not someone could have paid a few million in the summer, you know some sort of transfer fee rather than just watch him leave for buttons.

There are more examples but i mention the above as a highlight to my question considering they are all important in some way. Does it not worry people that as a selling club we seem to keep going in circles with players and selling for less than their worth ? That 2 million or slightly more in the summer could have brought in an extra player, even if it was a loan. Instead we have to look to replace with simply the slightly less wage bill coming from these decisions and meanwhile sell for a profit every summer.

A contract of £60,000 a week is £3.1 million a year. So a 4 year contract is worth £12.4 million in cost to the club.

Its not merely a matter of £2 million here or there.

When getting a player off the books for a year can save £3 million !

Thats £3 million that can be spent elsewhere.

Is more than the £2 million you're talking about there. That can be spent on things like on other players.

Its just not a 'slightly less wage bill' at all. Its a lot of money potentially and it all adds up if managed correctly.

What you don't want to do is waste money on players who aren't playing.

getting rid of Heitinga now may save the club £1.5million between now and the summer.

1. If Moyes was on £4million a year and Martinez is on £3million and is here for 4 years. £4million compensation plus £12million Martinez versus the £16 million Moyes (4x4million) = £16million.

Either way the club is no worse off and can afford to pay Martinez more in later years if successful. Like champions league. Probably in Martinez's contract too.

2. You don't know where negotiations are. We're not at the summer either when decisions may be made if no signing is likely.

3. Pienaar was signed when Arteta the highest earner had gone. Over 4 years a similar situation to Moyes/Martinez above even with a fee to Spurs. No major blow to the club if Pienaar performs for the team, until he's 34/35, and clubs income is also increasing in this time too.

4. See earlier post. We paid £5million or so for him plus 4 years at £3million. Total £16million or so. If the club get £2 million or so fee and get £1.5million in savings from the summer (if he has 18 months left on his contract that £4.5million saved !!! that can be spent elsewhere)

Any losses are minimised and the club isn't really in any worse position because there is a potential for the John Stones investment to mitigate any losses.

I don't see anything to be too concerned about unless we go out and spend £15million on a 32 year old with a history of bad injuries on £100,000 a week (£5.2million a year) on a 4 year contract.

So in a few words. Relax for the moment.

Are we on about Jelavic here?
