I had to see pics from the press conference to confirm it was really David Harrison (I had doubts that a very pushy agent had somehow concocted this whole story), but it really was him, so the Azeri press are obviously more credible than I gave them credit for. What they are saying in Russian:
- Abdullaev is coming in February, but for two weeks only. Moyes has yet to see him in action, apparently. If he's coming permanently, it will happen after June 1. Until then he'll play for Neftchi on loan.
- 3 other Neftchi youth players (15-18 year old) are also coming for trials etc.
- What most reports have scrupulously avoided are the words "work permit", "visa" and the like. From what I gather, we have yet to apply for it, and given that Azerbaijan are ranked lower than 75th in the world, even if Abdullaev had played in every senior international game (which he hasn't for a while now), we can only apply on the basis of special talent. Still, it would only do good for the application if he establishes himself in the national side, as David Harrison has said.
- There is a possibility for a summer friendly in Baku, but this really sounds more like an Azeri suggestion.
