The likes of 'Gamers Nexus' (who are very highly respected and really, really know their stuff) put MSI at the top of the pile for B450 boards. They have no peer. People should really learn NOT to buy on brand names, as they all have their duffers.

Thanks but I never buy just on brand names and that includes fashion. I prefer to buy on quality and other sustainability factors like whether they offer good support, warranty terms, etc.

In the case of B450 ATX mobos, I had zero knowledge on what was best as I had done zero research! It seems MSI had a resurgence lately as before they were rarely recommended. My first AMD Athlon K7 system had a MSI mobo. I don't have any hate for MSI.

Anyway my next PC is going to be based on a mini-itx form factor so again it's pointless gaining knowledge on ATX boards. I'll be happy to buy the MSI board if it tick all of my boxes.

Had a quick scan on google and apparently lots of people are asking the same question about pairing my MOBO with the RAM but no concrete answers as different CPU’s.

This page seems to think it’ll be okay:

Yeah it could be fine. I can only speak from experience of not using RAM from the QVL list and having to run it at a lower speed than I wanted. Probably made no discernable difference but its something that could have been avoided easily.

As for harddrive, the only reason I can think of when you'd want a 2.5" would be to fit in a laptop. No point in paying more for the thinner size for a desktop, really.

As for speed, I prefer 7200 because moving large files will be quicker and running games from it will also load quicker. I have this: https://www.ebuyer.com/726224-toshiba-p300-3tb-3-5-sata-high-performance-hard-drive-oem-hdwd130uzsva

As for GPU, didn't realise you already had the 1050Ti. It's still going to be the bottleneck for the system but its not cost-effective to pay 150 or more for a small increase now. Something like a 2060 would fit the system very nicely if you keep an eye on the price as a potential upgrade in the future.

@Nymzee

There's a rule of thumb that you should always go for at least three times the amount of storage you had before.

It seems modern games like Call of Duty consume a shocking amount of space. So I can see why you are veering towards 4TB drives.

There's generally a £30 difference between the 2 & 4Tb models. I'll be inclined to pay the extra money as it saves a headache later on. Plus games are getting bigger and bigger.

I also suggest factoring the cost of warranty when deciding which HDD. Manufacturers reduced warranty period in order to cut cost.

Noise level is another factor to consider. Generally faster drives are more noisier than slower ones. But then again, how often do you access your HDD may dictate whether noise is going to bother you.

My 14 year old son has got the PC gaming bug and is getting his first gaming PC for Xmas. He's picked it out himself and maxed out his budget from Xmas and birthday money. For his birthday he got the monitor and a corsair keyboard. What he doesn't know is I've also got him a matching corsair rgb mouse mat, logitech g pro x headset and when I ordered his monitor I actually ordered two and kept one. He's had a really rough year (see the mental health thread) but is on the up now so this is going to be an extra reward.

Lads don't be mean, he's spent hundreds on equipment and you want him to brick it first go?

@Nymzee I have a Samsung 970 SSD and I needed to update the BIOS so it could find the drive before cloning it. When it updates (you need to launch it off a USB) when it gets to 30-40%, turn it off at the wall.

With a fork whilst standing in water?!?!?!?!!?!?!?!?!?!?
