Two main reasons....

1) if large gatherings (ie full attendance) are not safe, a gathering of 100+ people especially for a contact sport involving 40 or so when you factor in Physio refs etc, will also not be safe
2) If large gatherings are not safe, there is no way the policing and ambulance requirements needed to oversee football, even behind closed doors, would be committed.

As Ive said throughout, the general mood in early March will not resemble the mood come late April, never mind as we enter May. It is already shifting and increasingly the position of cancel and void is going to emerge.

Even the BBC and other outlets are softening on the question now. Acknowledging the "extend at all costs" may not be feasible (there's no may about it, it's not) and stating that we "may" not have to follow what Europe does.

Slippage galore. It will continue.

It’s quite a simple decision to be made at some point, either football can carry on and there’s enough time to finish the season safely in which case crack on, or it can’t in which case it has to be cancelled. All of this ‘it’s not fair on some teams’ just needs to be put away, it’s completely irrelevant at a time like this.

It wasn’t fair that our two title winning teams got broken up because of the wars, it wasn’t fair that we got banned from Europe when we were once again the best team in the country and that team broke up, it wasn’t fair that we got shafted out of the CL when coming 4th just because they changed the rules for Liverpool to get back in. It wasn’t fair that Spurs missed out because Chelsea won it. It wasn’t fair that us, Villa, Spurs missed out on several years of champions league football because Liverpool and then City broke financial rules with one nearly going into administration and the other now facing a European ban.

When there’s a pandemic, similar to when there was a war, all of that ‘it’s not fair’ nonsense has to go out of the window. It can either be finished, or it can’t. That’s it.

And this sentiment seems increasingly apparent to people.

What is most interesting, is that on cancellation it's not been established that we are not going to go down the route of letting certain individuals (parading as mathematicians) start deciding results. If it's cancelled, it's voided. Thats been cleared up, from UEFA, to the FA's decision making processes re other leagues and everything in between.

The pandemic is accelerating. We have 4 weeks to get the number of cases down below 600 (the level it was at when football was deemed unsafe) or essentially we are out of time. There's a 1-2 week window in May where if we are close at the end of April we may be able to start and get things in, but in essence if we don't make the next deadline, the season will need to be cancelled.

The focus has to then turn to trying to save next season, while trying to help wider society deal with the pandemic. Good. Those who object to this course of action, fine them, dock them points for next season if you must, but ensure they are aware that dissent won't be tolerated on a decision to help wider society.

Makes me laugh the line about not following Europe, you can imagine that can’t you:

All of Europes Leagues: unfortunately we are going to have to null and void.

Prem: no we are gonna continue because one team is miles ahead and the media are desperate for them to win the title, so we will start our new season towards the end of 2020.

Rest of Leagues: Oh, ok, so you are accepting that none of your teams will be in either the Champions League or the Europa League then, ok good luck with that.

Premier League: But Liverpool...30 years.... Aldridge said...:...

If the EPL is voided, does that mean it never happened? So for example would lose all 15 of his goals? If so, at least the 5-2 show in December never existed.

I think the longer this is going on and peoples minds are rightly focused on the crisis that's become life, the shouts of the season must be finished become more ludicrous and detached from reality that people will soon be piping the like of caragher and any RS media right down

Won't be before time either mate, then just watch the u-turns. Carragher has form for u-turns, the Suarez shirt fiasco for instance.
