Last night during the 0-1 defeat against Chelsea I noticed a load of City fans heading for the exits with over ten minutes of the game remaining, they were pushing for an equaliser but more and more left!
I know it wasn't one of their best performances of the season (mainly due to Chelsea being boss) but I couldn't believe it. Have expectations risen so much that they expect to batter Chelsea 5-0?

Maybe its similar to our own expectations this season? We beat UTD away, played Arsenal off the park at their own gaff, but the atmosphere at Goodison has been woeful unless were hammering someone.....

in fact no, if we were challenging for the tittle at the moment and losing only 1-0 to Chelsea at home Im sure we would be right behind the team up until the last minute

Work in a pub in Manchester that houses city fans on matchday, having spoken to them they are quite fickle/shallow, believe they have a god given right to the title and every other trophy and seem to have a 'not bothered' attitude.

Still doesn't forgive them not trying to cheer on their team to the end, hopefully they will be the same on their visit to GP.

Did Brenda and the Tranny get an early dart ?

We didn't play Arsenal off the park at their own gaff, we drew 1-1 after having some very impressive spells in which we were in control of the match. They hit the post in the last minute. We did better there a few years ago, when Pienaar scored a glorious chip, but we couldn't hang on.

We absolutely battered them for the entirety of the first half and a fair degree of the second half. We did not do better there years ago. I can't remember the last time I disagreed with a post as utterly as I do with this one. I find it absolutely remarkable that anyone who watched that performance can attempt to downplay it like you have here.

You don't batter a team and then equalise to make it 1-1. That in no way constitutes a battering. We were in control of play for significant periods of the match, but we were a world away from battering them.

The performance in which we almost beat them after Pienaar's chip was better. We actually almost won, after taking the lead.

This post makes no sense.

Battering has two definitions here:
1) We completely outplayed them (and we did do this)
2) We score lots of goals and they don't (what the RS did to us last week)

1 means you're a good football team. 2 means you get 3 points, but who know why, it can be because of 1. Or it can be because of injuries, or snidey penalties, or one world class player. Or a terribly high line and a fast counter attack.

Neither of this things happened with Pienaar's chip. One of these things happened against Arsenal. They are very defensively sound, and we still don't have enough players that can unlock a world class defense. But they were on their back foot for the majority of the match, especially the first 40 minutes, ala a battering.

Well that's were we differ in our opinions.

Being on the back foot is part of football, it's called defending. You don't batter a team through being incapable of outscoring them. If anything it proves a lack of adequacy in attack, or proficiency in the oppositions defence.

Don't West Ham have the highest number of clean sheets in the league? Chelsea were incapable of scoring against them, a la they did not batter them.

Attacking football is not superior or inferior to defencive football, it is just different. You don't batter a team 0-0.

Pedant alert

I've seen many games where one team battered the other and LOST.

Serious, you can batter someone and still lose, you just don't deliver the decisive blow(s)> happens in boxing a lot, one fighter batters the other but is felled by one punch even though he has been battering the other for 10 rounds.

We didn't play Arsenal off the park ??

What game were you watching. I seem to recall Everton completely dominating the 1st half, so much so that Arsenal for the majority were chasing shadows. Apart from that couple of chances in the space of a minute before half time, we passed them off the field. A good 70% of the second half was the same way too....... They got extremely lucky with their goal if i recall also.

An absolute superb performance and to be honest, had we won the game 3 nil, nobody would bemoan that scoreline such was the way we played. I sometimes browse on other teams forums and just happened to be browsing Bluemoon (city) and a couple of lads on there were tinkering with the idea that we had a chance of winning the league after watching that game.

We were dominating the first half so much that it finished 0-0? If they were chasing shadows then why were we incapable of scoring? It's either because we lacked proficiency in attack, or because their defence did their job, or a combination of the two.

There's obviously a difference in outlook and opinion, but no, I'm afraid equalising to draw 1-1 does not constitute playing the opposition off the park.

People are free to think you can batter a team without being capable of outscoring them, but I don't agree with it. You can say it's being pedantic but I disagree. A battered team would be collecting the ball out of their own net a lot, they wouldn't be taking the lead and drawing 1-1.
