Champions League Restructure

I think you're failing to get your head around something: if the CL was the competition you say it is: a great spectacle and witnessing the constant regeneration of greateness with the teams that play in it, why on earth is it being - to all intents and purposes - scrapped?

The people who need to keep this cash cow producing see what we all see: a dire spectacle of dull football apart from maybe one game in the latter stages of the competition, at a time when the lack of star quality in the game is at a low ebb. There's no individual now who can mask the cracks in the circus...no Ronaldo, no Messi, no Zidane. The best that can be coughed up is Mbappe or Hazard or Neymar...amoebas compared with the three they replace.

Patronising much?
I think you’re failing to get your head around something. The group stages are pretty much a non event, they are rejigging it for extra revenues, more games v the top sides. It’s been spoken about for years, the viewing figure for the group stages are quite poor. The knockout phase this year was very good, again, just because the outcome wasn’t what we wanted and the historically, strongest teams aren’t/wasn’t what they once were, didn’t detract from my enjoyment of it. One good game in the latter stages? Really? Not just me then.....

I'm honestly at the stage now where if Everton qualified for the Champions League I don't even think I'd bother going to the games

The Tournament has been perverted for too long and is just a money making exercise for the established heavy hitters

What prestige does it really actually have any more?

It’s the most prestigious competition in club football. Too many on here are trying to kid themselves otherwise, presumably because Liverpool won it last season.

I'm patronising but you;re the one calling me stubborn and silly.

As for your point: the viewing figures are poor because the "product" is mind-numbingly dire, the spectacle has been killed, the teams are way off being top class.

The CL project has failed. Utterly.

UEFA sense the fall off and are now tearing up the competition rules in an effort to cover up the dearth of truly class teams.

Uefa aren't the driving force behind this though? The restructuring is a result of pressure from the Spanish and Italian clubs, at least as I understand it.

Without a doubt, in my opinion. Thing is, their proposal as I understand it, will require a number of PL clubs to bail out of the PL on the wing and a prayer that this new format will be a success. As in pay them squillions.

I just dont see why more games between the same clubs will be of that much interest after a season or two.

It's uefa responding to pressure from the Italians and Madrid and Barca. Premier League and bundesliga clubs aren't so keen.

Uefa is just desperate to retain the revenue from CL.

Well that's the nature of UEFA: they respond to football superpowers. But the reason any changes are contemplated is because the formula is bust.

Agreed.

The people that are pushing this don't understand football fans in my view. They see a packed stadium for Juve Vs PSG and think, great let's do it every week.

It doesn't work like that. They should be made to read the story of the goose that laid the golden eggs.

Probably the best team these shores have ever seen, who seemingly beat everyone at a canter in our League, can’t produce it in the Champions League. I don’t think the standard is anywhere near as bad as you make out. But we know why your doing it. We can’t have a decent, constructive discussion because at the end of it, the only narrative is to belittle the Orcs achievement. I would give my left testicle to see us in the Champions League knockout stages, coming up against the big European glamour clubs. These clubs will always have some of the best players in the World in their ranks, regardless of whether they’re as good now than 15 years ago. If we could do that at Goodison before we leave. Wow. As supporters that’s what we live for. I may be on my own here but that would be better for me than a Carabao Cup win. And would set us up nicely for moving to BMD. The FA Cup? I’m not so sure.

That's a big claim that flies in the face of the available evidence. I look forward to seeing how you are going to justify it.

Is that supposed to be an argument against the competition failing as a spectacle? That just represent cash generated by corporate sponsors who rely on UEFA to make sweeping changes if need be to "the product"...which they'll now do because a) a number of the moribund elite want to keep their snouts in the trough and b ) the lack of great individuals and teams is becoming obvious so a structural shake up is being used to inject "more flavour" back in.
