Less than a year ago Liverpool fans where hailing Joel Matip as the best purchase of any club that summer and where already labelling him world class, not just crackpot twitter people either but well known fan sites such as redmen tv, rewind it about two years prior and the same things by the same people where being said about Momo Sahko, labelled as world class and how they had a bargain and had psg's pants down to get him so cheap.

Same people are the same ones now labelling a player who had one and a half very good seasons for a mediocre saints side - all of that good period of form saw him paired up with a very good at the time Jose Fonte who was the organizer at the back and the leader of that defensive unit - and club captain, when fonte was sold in the January - VVD played one game without him - the game he done hiss ankle in, since his return everyone has attributed the poor form he has shown with him not wanting to be at Saints any longer - but doubts about how he has recovered from the injury and about just how much his good play was aided by being alongside a very good defender in Fonte who provided a very solid cover defensively to allow VVD to be the 'attacking centre back' is completely unknown.

Watch some highlights of VVD, and i don't mean the youtube 'high point' ones, i mean watch his defending 'properly' - he is a cb who relies on his physical attributes over any positioning or brain, and yeah it does get him out of trouble at times, but it can also create a mess at the back of his teams.

Will by the end of the season be major question marks over this transfer after initially being lauded, then again if Klopp throws him in first game against Man City - it could get interesting very early doors for him :)

If I’m honest mate Tldr I’ve skimmed over it though.

No ones arsed about matip he’s terrible, no ones arsed about Liverpool either I was just replying to lads who brought Liverpool players into the debate.
I base my opinion on van dyke purely on the fact he walks straight into any defence in this league if you think otherwise then so be it, lads downplay the boys abilitly because he signed for them.
Just go and look at the van dyke thread on here the majority were jizzing in their kecks but he’s crap now apparently. ;)

Back on topic I’m not overly arsed about being bummed by Besiktas and paying in excess of 25 million for a second rate striker.

Majority on here don't know who he is or if they even want him but are still whinging he hasn't been signed in a day.

Proper weirdos.
Nothing to do with being weirdos . People are just frustrated after the poor form on show this season and getting a little bit desperate for some good news for a change !

Well luckily I didn’t support any English team before because if it wasn’t Everton you would all hate me , also I was the game besiktas beat Chelsea 2 nil at their home , I was on besiktas Tottenham game , besiktas Arsenal game , besiktas Napoli ,benfica , feyenord , Lisbon ,Lyon , Brugge , dinamo kiev and many more I try to go all European games , I will support Everton in Uk tho

you better support us jack. i don't like people being happy in life, i like misery!

Exactly. Not sure why some of our fans love any opportunity to take a dig at the club and in the process give way over the top unnecessary praise to them. I wouldn't even call Coutinho "World Class" to be honest. Would he get in a World 11? Is he in the best 2 or 3 players in his position in the world? Not a chance for me.

Great player though and done far more to be given that label than Van Dijk has imo.

coutinho's progressed in the last two seasons to CL level. How barca rate him ahead of eriksen though is a bit mistifying. Not entirely sure why they're willing to make him the second most expensive player of all time though, bit weird.

Suarez:

Groningen > Ajax > Liverpool

He was world class then.

VVD

Groningen > (22) Celtic > (24) Saints

Suarez

Groningen > (20) Ajax >(23) Liverpool

Suarez had also had a great world cup the prior summer with Uruguay, had been capped at the age of 23 about 45-50 times and scored about 25 goals for the national side in both the world cup, world cup qualifiers and the copa America mate.

VVD had 2 and a half seasons at Saints playing for a mid table side - has flopped on the international stage, and has largely been a media hyped up player during transfer windows

for information

For new signings to be eligible to play in the FA Cup 3rd Round from Friday night:

  • Players must have received international clearance [if applicable] and be registered with the Football Association by midday on Friday.

ah ok. i thought it had to be today, as someone said that yesterday. Means there's less rush then.

Not even funny :(
We still miss him...

Panicking. Lost Neymar, Messi getting older.

He doesn't - otherwise City would have bought him mate, he also wouldn't displace either Vetonghen or Alderweireld from the Spurs side, yes he may start for the other teams, but he wouldn't be the best cb at most of those teams either, Bailey at United is a better centre back - and about 3 years younger too, Christensen IMO is a more proven and better cb also at Chelsea

But that's literally every player????

I love it when people go 'we need to get a 20 goal striker' - well, they generally cost £80mil

and he wants to join
Sorry, but I disagree. Every player comes with risk: will they adapt to the team? will they stay in form? will they suit the league (if applicable)?

All that I understand and accept, however there are in my humble opinion ways of limiting this risk by looking for more 'proven' acquisitions.

Yes they may occasionally cost, which isn't ideal at all, however I'm in no way implying we should splurge the figure you've mentioned.

In an ideal world (which we're not in of course) we'd been looking at players proven in this league or with a more favourable scoring record.

How many people knew about him previous to our interest? It's not an ideal world however, so perhaps your last line is major selling point.

Think you're missing the point I was making.
