It's a bit like darts,snooker etc there isn't really a physical reason for decline but it happens.

You need a blend of many things to keep being succesfull, hunger, determination, moving with the times(Fergie was excellent at this) keeping it fresh, knowing when players are declining, money to spend of course, just a whole lot of things. Premier League is a different animal though, money has really made a divide between the rich and poor.
