Can we please give 4-4-2 a go?

Know your personnel I guess. We had the slowest no. 10 in the league and none of our managers trusted Iwobi or Bernard enough to try them there instead. Ancelotti (and Ferguson) realized we had more potential in counter attacking than possession so they opted for a 442

Silva seemed to have a blind committment to 4-3-3 and even towards his end he failed to see that
he either needed to change things or it was adios. But in spite of crap results and poor football he
would not change.

DCL no longer plays the Robinson Crusoe role every week and Richarlison has blossomed- plus Moise Kean
has a role as the first-up sub. I agree we need a top winger but we have Gbamin to return and he is a box-to box
player that, with luck, might add dynamism to the midfield.

I wouldn't have been in favour of a 4-4-2, mostly because I don't think we have the midfielders to pull it off (I still don't in all honesty), but what I underestimated was how it would change us in an attacking way by having DCL and Richarlison playing as a pair. Think both Dunc and Ancelotti were really quite astute to have worked this out. Still think, as per when we were playing 4231, that our major problems lie in midfield though. We only really got control of the game against Palace when we brought Davies on and went to a midfield three (mostly because Schneiderlin and Sigurdsson as a pair and as individuals aren't good enough to control a game from midfield in a 442)

Obviously this won't be a popular sentiment with some, but I think we need a "back to basics" approach

Play Dom and Richy up top with two wingers and two center mids behind

Can it really be worse at this stage?

Play one of the strikers a bit deeper if you want to be more hipster about it
OK, Yes, let's do it!

Probably won't work but let's be bold.

442 has been a revelation especially for Dom and Richy. Well done Dunc

Surely @Mikey_Fitzgerald has got to get the credit? He started the thread! :celebrate:

Whoever thought of it first, it doesn't matter, we've won some games and moved up the table. I think more teams are going back to 442 and I quite like it. I dont think we have played a proper 433, it's often been 451, with the striker too isolated.

I mean, 442 is probably the most successful tactic ever, it has fallen out of fashion with football hipsters but let's not pretend it's some great revelation.
