Can We Improve On Last Seasons Points Total

Can't see it, but think we'll repeat it next season.
I think that. We all said last season was a transition year but it appears it is this season with Distin, Osman and Hibbert looking like they don't have much time left and we may see young players like Browning get game time and experience. I have faith in RM long term, just hope this blip is something we remedy quickly.

Don't see why not. Injuries are against us at the moment and minus Kev (who I hope won't be too long but looks bad) Ross, Seamus, Pienaar, Oviedo and Kone are all nearly back, so we've got an almost full strength squad...

No. But we will have a real go at the Europa whilst trying to bed in some of the youth team. I would be happy to take a hit this year if it sees us do well in Europe and unearth a few more first teamers from the accademy.

1 or 2 seasons time is probably when we should be critically assessing the progress made.

Was just thinking about our points total last year and so far this season. hopefully our defensive performance at Anfield has helped us turn a corner and start defending properly now (fingers crossed).

Game 7: Man Utd (A) Last Season 1-0 Points 3
Game 8: Villa (H) Last Season 2-1 Points 3
Game 9: Burnley (A) Last Season 3-1 Points 3
Game 10: Swansea (H) Last Season 3-2 Points 3
Game 11: Sunderland (A) Last Season 1-0 Points 3
Game 12: West Ham (H) Last Season 1-0 Points 3

From our next 6 fixtures we got maximum points last year which will be very difficult to replicate especially with one being at Old Trafford, so again I see the Palace home defeat as a massive opportunity missed. And after 12 games we could quite easily be 6/9 points behind our total from last season.

What does everyone think?

There's virtually no chance of us getting 18 points from our next six games. It's extremely rare for any team in the Prem to do that. Bear in mind that we have potentially tiring games in the Europa league as well.

Agree with most the replies and its good to see some realistic assessments. Seems everyone is willing to "take a hit" on the points total if we have a good go at the Europa as everyone is confident of getting top 7 minimum as well as having to bed in a few youngsters coming through

maybe not, but liverpool are brought back down to below our level, united will probably be better than last season, but maybe not as much. chelsea are much better, city seem worse, arsenal probably worse as well as spurs.

so it would not surprise me one bit if we actually managed less points but actually finish 4th.

the league will be tight this season in the top 7, teams like soton may not be too far off, but we usually start seasons with something like that happening, but it never lasts.

We certainly won't improve on our points total but I will not care if we can land a trophy. We have a great opportunity in Europe and the FA Cup and I believe Martinez will take all competitions seriously.

I think with the exception of City and Chelsea, the points for places 3rd - 6th will be lower this season. I think 70 points will get you in the top 4. Arsenal are probably still on track but United, Spurs, Liverpool and ourselves have already dropped a lot of points already. We've had by far the toughest fixtures so far though and one of our key players in Barkley hasn't played yet. We need to avoid defeat next week at Old Trafford and then go on a winning streak.

Last year the top 7 got more points than the top 7 normally get because the bottom 13 couldn't lay a hand to them. Ths year all 7 have struggled, early days but maybe the gap has closed a bit.

So yeah, I don't think we'll match our points total. We might well match our table position, though, which is more important.
