Can we beat seventy two points ?

75 points got you 5th this season.

Anyone sneering about 72 points need to get their heads around that fact.

61 points this season for us and that is just 4 points short of how far away from 4th spot we were in last season's piss poor campaign.

We are simply miles off.

In the last decade the closest we've come to a CL spot is 7 points off it. Our best season and we were still 2 wins and a draw off the last CL spot that season.

Pathetic for a club like this. The only way to bridge the gap is to spend massively and wisely. I have zero expectation of that.

You cant give the amounts of points we give to our rivals every season and expect to finish in the top 4. There were very good chances of victories at the Emirates against ten men and at Old Trafford, we got 1 point out of those fixtures. We were 1 up against Spurs having caught them cold at Goodison with Deulofeu 1 on 1 on the stroke of half time, we didnt finish them off in the way they finished us off at White Hart Lane. We managed to lose a game to Liverpool at home that had 0-0 written all over it. We took the lead and saved 2 penalties at the Etihad and still didn't win. Sadly when opportunity knocks this group of players choke, they seek to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory whenever possible.

If we make the signings we should, we will compete for top 4. The good news is we have plenty of young players that could challenge for spots in the team next season, but we need to secure some quality signings in the right areas. That starts with the back line.

We are miles away from getting too 4. And I don't think this will change in the lifetime of anybody presently on GOT

Roberto Martinez laid down the foundations for Koeman to take us to the next level. He didn't get us a trophy or the CL but the players in the first season bought into Martinez's style and we were very, VERY unlucky not to make the champions league.

This was the table with 3 games left. Give @davek a break, he has a real point.

then we lost to Man City at home 1-2 while Arsenal won an easy home game to WBA 3-0 and the table looked like this.

But we were that close. That close. (2013/14)

Wow, forgot the RS were that close to winning it

LOL

What i don't understand is why does that season (13/14) get rolled out as something relevant to how close we were to top four?

A lot of the teams in the league that year were crap, look at the managers compared to now. We did ok points wise but got 5th place. Now usually when most teams are a shambles (or nicely put, in transition) it is an anomaly but it managed to happen again last season and we were nowhere to be seen. If we got 72 points that season we would have been in the hunt for a title with Leicester and spurs and that would have been something special to write home about.

72 would have got us 6th, shows how utterly meaningless it is.

It was the season we won 8 away from home, including victory at Old Trafford, Lukaku became Lukaku and Evertonians finally started expecting more. Do you really think Martinez would have been sacked if he'd won us the league cup or FA Cup last season? Evertonians were on the radio every week expecting more. We expected the good times back but that's only because of what Martinez achieved in his first season. The players let him down. 72 points is a huge achievement especially in one's first season and if he'd had Moshiri earlier he might still be in a job. We finished 11th for 2 seasons not 17th. He was 15-20% away from being an Everton managerial legend. He got better out of Barkley than Koeman has and his mistakes were pushing Pienaar out the door too early and not spending enough money, which he didn't really have unless he sold players like Fellaini. Moshiri joined Everton in Jan/Feb 2016 but our expectations had been raised to expect cup wins and CL and that's solely because of what Martinez achieved in his first season. If Koeman achieves 5th next season with 72 points, or a cup quarter final, even that, people on this forum will be saying it's good progress. The reality is Koeman now has funds to aim for CL and if we don't even get close to it next season, his tenure is a failure.

Martinez failed at the back end of last season, but everyone was against him.

Good write up and I'm not saying it was a bad season by any means, but i feel my point still remains. We got more points BECAUSE teams like utd were pants, add an extra 4 points on to our tally this season then pick two games where we lost but should have won (or pick 3 draws) and we would be bang in the hunt. Yes all ifs/buts and maybes but the quality of our opposition will correlate to number of points we get.

Just like it will be harder to get 5th now than it was back then because utd and spurs are so much better. I can't help but think 70+ points that season is probably worth 60 something this one. There is no doubt that 2013/14 was the better season, but for me only just and considering we had a 10 game spell where we really fell apart it wouldn't have taken much to have bettered it this season and still have finished 6th.

Nonsense. Look how many deadwoods Koeman has to get rid. It will take time and obstruct his rebuilding plan.

Koeman has been more than happy to play Holgate, Robles, Barkley, Barry, Lukaku, all brought to the club or introduced by Martinez. That's nearly half the team. Martinez had his own deadwood to deal with too. Gibson, Anichebe, Jelavic, Fellaini, Heitinga, Magaye Gueye, every manager does! Martinez had to sell Fellaini to purchase Lukaku, Koeman had and has money, so let's see what he does!

People are in denial if they think 2013/14 was not the best season in recent memory.

Koeman can't buy a whole team in 2 windows. Of course some players who are deemed to be good enough will stay but when you look at the number of deadwoods it made up more than 60% of the orginial team.

Some people made it out like 2014-2015 and 2015-2016 seasons never happened. To use one season as the benchmark without mentioning the horrendous past 2 seasons is a joke.
