I'll take issue with that comment.

If you look at where MLS started in 1996 and where it is today, it's come on by leaps and bounds.

Quality of play. Quality of players. Quality of management, from the boardroom to the managers.

It's improved immensely in that time. In addition, our National Team has benefited by the improved quality of play and development. The only main issue right now is player's wages. Not anywhere close to the standard of "professional."

Will we be EPL, Serie A, La Liga, etc...??? Not for quite a long time if ever.

But it's certainly a much better quality product on the field than it used to be.

has any club got an actual purpose-built-football-only stadium?

Yes.

Colorado - ****'s Sporting Goods Park
Chicago - Bridgeview
LA/Chivas - Home Depot Center
Columbus - Crew Stadium
Dallas - Pizza Hut Park (nice, I've been to that one)

Clubs currently building:

NY Red Bulls
Real Salt Lake

Clubs in negotiations to build:

Houston
San Jose

I'm sure this is incomplete but should give you an idea. MLS is very "pro" soccer specific stadiums. They want the clubs to be able to control all revenue streams from the stadiums such as concessions and parking as opposed to sharing with another tenant such as an NCAA or NFL team.

Here's a good link that did better than I did:

Yup.

Last I heard as many as nine teams could be in purpose built within five years. I really don't follow MLS that closely though so if things have changed so be it. However there are some and more to come.

As an Aussie blue, there's nothing I love more than seeing Cahill knockin in goals for both club and country.
However with the current situation I really don't want Cahill anywhere near the Australian team.. For me I guess club just comes first, especially with all the injury woes atm..
That being said, I absolutely love the Socceroos and never miss a game, but I can barely watch the world cup qualifiers.. Did anyone watch the Aus vs Uzbekistan game? how the hell did Aus win that, absolute shambles...

the game will never progress in Australia or America im afraid to say

Really? As far as I'm concerned Aus soccer has progressed in massive leaps and bounds..
The introduction of the A-league had a huge impact in reigniting the nation's interest in soccer, and the 2006 world cup sure as hell showed that we ain't no pushovers.

Compare that to where they were a few years ago; never had a world cup goal (unless u count own goals), last qualified for the world cup 30 years ago and the only soccer games being played across the nation were in the national soccer league, Brisbane strikers v Sydney United.. that would pull in a good 1000 people.. who wanted to see unknown Aussies who play for peanuts and work a second job anyway.. That was only a 4 years ago..

Nowadays a Melbourne Victory home game gets an average 27,000 attendance, and all the clubs are attracting international players from around the globe.
Obviously we're still a long way behind our european competition, but given time it can only progress further.

no progress? pfft..
