Bryan Oviedo

We do look tighter defensively when he plays

Baines is the more complete player, but I'd say Oviedo is actually the better defender of the two

Yeh wouldn't argue with this.

Baines still gets in when fit (and in form), like. But Oviedo's more than capable as back up.

Also, for some of the stick Garbutt used to get, I don't think he ever looked bad defensively. However, his year at Fulham didn't go to plan at all. So he too needs the pre-season I think to show that he can be part of the squad going forward. I'd like him to be, as I think he's a good player in the making.

As I said, it may well come down to a toss up between them two - whoever impresses more in pre-season will stay (barring any offers already having come in that we wouldn't know about, obviously. Could probably see them being more interest (at least British based) in Garbutt than Oviedo)

I agree, Baines is first choice, but Oviedo is perfectly fine in the back up role

Again, I'd move Oviedo up the field to the wing. I might also try Garbutt there as well

All three can be in the same squad and be of use. We really don't need to look at culling anyone right now IMO

I think we need a true left winger, though - and neither Oviedo or Garbutt are creative/good enough for that role.

Gartbutt is pure full-back in that he excels with having space to run into. Oviedo is better in tighter areas, but for me always has looked a tad lost when played further upfield.

While I agree we won't / or shouldn't be culling anybody until RK knows what he wants to do with the squad, we also do need to be looking for more quality in that left wing area. And we would then have Lennon, Mirallas and Del and this hypothetical new signing all able to mix and match between the two flanks.

I think Oviedo has what it takes on the wing, at least in an emergency

I think once he'd played there a bit more, he'd be more comfortable in the role

Garbutt had a gash loan spell. Didn't watch him but some of the Fulham fan's comments weren't great so to say he's better than Oviedo seems a bit daft.
Oviedo had a bad run of form as did most the team as well as being played out of position. Think it's pretty shortsighted of fans to be jumping on his back saying he's not good enough all of a sudden.

I've never liked him as a player tbh not just last season; don't feel confident when he plays. Had some good performances but who hasn't. I've wanted him gone for ages so Garbutt can play more. I know Fulham didn't go to plan as he was in and out & they were fighting relegation but he was brilliant for us whenever he played. Only full-back we have that knows how to cross properly these days.

Fair enough.

But we need a better player for that position anyway - as in a real quality player - to push us to the next level and back to competing for top six.

Oviedo isn't that, as much as I think he's a decent utility player

3 at different stages of their development and careers mate. They have been needed really havn't they and all three have contributed over the last 18 months for my money.

Down to a poor physio team meaning injuries were a constant. Ideally you want 2. We can't keep them all happy if they're all fit.
