Bryan Oviedo

Wouldn't want him to either.

On his day still one of the best in the league (Chelsea at the Bridge a few weeks back is a fine example of that), but at the same time there's no urgent need to shoehorn him back into the side for the sake of it.

Oviedo is playing well and deserves his place. The good thing about Baines is I for one do feel he has the experience and ability to be able to become a bit more of a utility player for us.

I genuinely wouldn't mind seeing him in a midfield three (probably alongside Barry and Besic) in a game towards the end of the season (obviously depending what's at stake)/pre-season.

Definitely has the ability to play there.
I wouldn't want him to go either. He's got to fight for his place and be prepared to drop to the bench if required though.

His attitude on occasion is a thing I dont like. Both this season and last he's been a bit too critical of the play and seems to place himself outside of all that. If he's a senior player and feels that he's earned the right to speak out, that's fair enough. But if he's that vocal off the pitch he should be expected to be doing it where it matters: on the pitch. Doesn't do that though. Just mopes about and finds himself part and parcel of poor defensive performances and then slopes off the pitch - eventually to bemoan to journalists the fact we're not defending well or 'game managing' well. He's on the pitch and keeps his trap shut though.

To my mind he's earned his place on the bench and now has it all to prove if he's to shift Oviedo out of the starting line up.

I don't really question his attitude in all honesty.

I do feel being a local lad it's more of he tries to be a bit more of a conduit for the fans in terms of that - I don't really feel there's much wrong with saying the results haven't been good enough because they haven't.

But yeh I agree, he does on occasion seem to shy away when on the field in terms of stepping up and being a leader when needed.

Not prepared to sort it out on the pitch? Then dont bother being the backseat driver off it. I just read it as a lack of responsibility. Him and Jagielka and Barry should have a massive presence on the pitch and be able to influence others when there's a game on the slide or get into the officials if there's a consistent flow of decisions against Everton. I dont see it, and Southall was bang on the money highlighting that there's no leader in this team.

The guy has an incredible attitude , there is nothing wrong with wanting baines back into side most of us do but oviedo has been more the more solid left back than baines at the moment, oviedo has won his place as much as baines lost his. I don't care if he is not a senior enough, did you see that header he tried from nearly outside the box? That is an attitude of joe royles quality don't you think?

Agreed. I font think it's been anything spectacular, but then again I dont want spectacular form a LB, tbh. He's been reliable and competitive and a key factor in the recent upturn.

The thing that makes no sense about that Ball viewpoint is that he was a player that tackled well and defended solidly. I'd have thought that someone like Oviedo would have been more Ball's type of player. It underlines that he's just saying stuff for saying stuffs sake and probably looking to try and make the case for a mate to get back in the team over the claims of a foreign player he doesn't know. It's a pretty dishonest piece in that respect. As you say: we have a settled defence for now, so why on earth would anyone look at that and think a change was necessary? Ridiculous.

Spot on that. Baines over Oviedo and Mirallas over anyone on the left: two calls for me that just highlight how off the pace someone is regarding what's best for this team. Nostalgia calls based on what went on in the past. Mirallas in particular is pure poison for this team. He'd be nowhere near the bench if it was me picking the team. He has to go in the summer. Let's hope he has a few appearances at Euro2016 and some other club put a £15M bid in for him.

As regards Ball I don't think it's quite as machievelian than that. I just don't think he's the brightest spark. There is also an element that he has to put something to improve upon to make his comment worthwhile. As I said above, I miss Kendalls comment and I don't get an awful lot from either Balls or Radcliffe's insight.

I think there is some nostalgia. It's a bit more than that though as They will soon be calling for Deulofeu to start over Cleverley. I think there are a layer of the fanbase who just wants us to score 4-5 goals past a side every week. Martinez has to take some fault for that as he has encouraged them with some of his statement (even though it was probably inadvertent). The aim should be to win games. If a side is winning then that's the most important thing.

We have a nice balance now. Lukaku really puts very little effort in defensively and Barkley can be guilty of sauntering around off the ball. That's ok, you can't really argue with their offensive returns. However if you are carrying two players defensively you have to compensate for that in other areas. Further luxury players like Mirallas, or fullbacks who's main focus is attacking make the balance go a bit offkey.

Baines will get another opportunity. It will be up to him to take it. As will Stones. Howard in all likelihood won't but that's no bad thing. For now though we stick with a structure and defence where we look the most solid all season.

Ball and Radcliffe merely repeat what they think the critics of the team want to hear. Same as Barry Horne's column. Echo chambers.

I'm agreeing with you in principle lad.

I wouldn't go as far to question Baines' attitude but I would like him (and a few other senior pros) to be a bit more vocal on the pitch. Jags has been great in the last few weeks in fairness to him.

Thats a very good post.

i think @davek also highlighted that we looked more solid with Galloway/Browning at the start of the season. Of course it all depends on the overall team.

Gk -- Clearly Robles looks world class compared to Howard so its taking some getting used to and not sure how good he actually is/could be for us.

CB -- Mori looks very good indeed though we dont know about stones/jags yet as it could be thst howard affected stones form.

CM --,I think whilst Barry is solid we need energy next to him which means McCarthy out of position. Id like to see McCarthy and Besic there. See how we look.

FB -- Baines,Oviedo,Garbutt,Galloway can all play there. I guess its good to have an attacking option and a defensive option depending on the game. Galloway is a future centre back of course but still 3 into 1 doesnt fit so i wonder what will happen here as Baines will want to be first choice and Garbutt wont get games.

The LB positon is quite interesting. Could Oviedo come back from the major injuries hes had and take the position away from local crowd favourite baines?

Where does thst leave Baines?

Thanks mate. I would agree with him. We have enough creativity going forward and don't need it from our full backs.

What becomes of Baines. I suspect a squad utility player.
